  • What's on my paycheck isn't any of your concern

Today I got my 1st paycheck from the job at Hersheypark. One of my co-workers wanted to know how much I got & what rate of pay I was getting. I told him that basically that's "none of his business." He said..Really? Why does it have to be a mystery?" I just glared at him & walked away.
When it comes to MY paycheck I keep that sucker private. There a lot of places that if you ask about someone's rate of pay that it can land you in hot water.

What a nosy litte arsewipe. And yes, at a lot of places, sharing how much you make can even be punishable by termination. And if not, it just pisses you off when you find out that a temp is making $1 more an hour than you even though you've worked there longer.........

A company can't legally fire you for willingly sharing your pay information with each other. They can fire you for snooping into someone else's information or bullying someone else or sharing someone else's information. The idea is that if a company is discriminating in its pay practices, the only way the employees could find out is by comparing their pay rates. If they're willing to compare them, then they may.

But that also means that you do NOT have to share if you don't want to. I don't share that information.

I've been asked that by co-workers. I usually (coyly) tell them "Why, aren't you a nosy little thing." smile to let them know I'm not mad or anything and walk away. They either laugh and / or shrug it off and leave me alone about it.

I completely understand not wanting to share your earnings with others. It's generally a good idea, except amongst friends.

But being rude, and calling someone "an arsewipe" for a prima facie innocent enquiry? That's a bit out of line. A simple "Sorry, I don't talk about my pay." would have sufficed. Probably would have cut off the second question about it being a mystery too.

A friend of mine's family own a business, and they actually fired their own brother and his two sons because one of the sons found out a "non family" employee made more money than him.

my fav co worker told me she was earning 40 grand a year (we just got our salary reviews)

my salary went up 2 grand, hers didnt go up at all she got a small bonus (small being $1000)

after she said, well im on 40 grand what are you on now and I said "Sorry ***** I dont feel comfortable sharing my salary with anyone) she got SO ANGRY

going on about how she had shared her salary and it wasnt fair that she had told me and I wouldnt tell her.... (what is she five)

its no ones business what you earn

the reason I wouldnt tell her, her workload is MUCH more stressful and mine, but im only paid a little less than her... if she ever found out I know she would demand I take on some of her workload and give her some of mine.

Not happening, im not going to help anyone who tells me that her daughter doesnt wear knickers.... YUCK dont tell me that shit

What wagegoth said. At least in the US, they are not legally permitted to prevent people from sharing wage information.

A lot of places still have it listed as a "rule" and will actually fire people for it, but it's usually because they are ignorant of the law, or they know the law and don't care because the vast majority of their employees are ignorant of the law.

There's a vague possibility this guy could have been working as a mole for the employers and trying to check up on whether or not you're following the rules.

people do get pissy over that, i have a co worker with a college degree that got an extra 25 cents and another co worker got pissy about it.

the only thing that pisses me off is I push almost twice as many carts per trip as said coworker, they make more trips, but not twice as many, and that co worker got a pin for great customer service? but i'm not going to go apeshit over a stupid pin with the store # on it, my store and co manager know how I work, which means I don't give a shit what my assistant/CSMs think

Actually, in SA, there's a company that says you CAN be fired for sharing your salary details with your co-workers. Mostly because they pay the lowest possible salaries they can to people who don't know what they're worth.

I believe it may have been listed as a "rule" but I think it was mainly because the brother's youngest son was raising a stink complaining about being family and making less that they'd rather cut their losses and fire them all.

They're a bunch of assholes, how my friend and his brother turned out so well is beyond me. Oh wait, that's right they don't work for the company (hmm)

Our office does have rules against sharing your pay/salary details. I don't believe we actually fire people over it but you will be talked too.

Don't know specifically why, however the pay rates vary quite a bit here as they're based on seniority and division. But all divisions work on the same floor. So I guess its an anti "Omigwad x operators taking y make 25 cents more then me!" measure.

Well I better let the manager at the Deb shop (who is still there) know that she can't legally fire people for that...she used to threaten us with termination if we talked about our wages.

A lot of us live in "right to work" states where basically an employee can be fired for any reason at any time.

I don't know why anyone wants to know what someone else makes in their company. Nothing good can come from the knowledge. If you make more they are upset and if they make more you are upset. I agree with the OP. My salary is my business and one of the few things I won't share if asked.
