  • what not to do during an orientation

I attended the first day of a two day orientation. I am excited about the job and the company seems decent so it wasnt that big of a deal to sit through. I was shocked and amazed at some of the stupid behaviour or some of the other new hires. Yes its just an orientation and you probably will never see these people again (they do it by district so most people were from different stores) but you should still be on your best behaviour! Do you have any stories?

*We were told specifically not to eat or smoke in front of the store. A group of 15-16 year old boys decided to go downstairs anyway and EAT THEIR LUNCHES OFF THE TOP OF A TRASH CAN in FRONT of the store WHILE smoking. Wtf seriously who eats using the trashcan as a table?

*We were provided lunch (subs) and could choose from a few different types. Each was labled with a single letter based on what kind of meat. I ordered a turkey and grabbed what I thought was a "t". I then heard a guy say that they were short one vegie sub. I looked down at mine and on closer inspection the "t" could have been a "v". I gave him the sub and he went back to his table and started rather loudly making fun of me for possibly mistaking the two letters. When hastily written letters can look like others damnit! Well it ended up being a turkey one after all and I had to go and get another one from downstairs. No big deal but I still think it was tacky to make such a scene over it.

*No one enjoys sitting through these things but they do serve a function. Its not THAT bad or anything and anyone who cant sit through a few hours shouldnt have a job. There was this older lady at my table who asked stupid questions EVERY couple minutes. "I dont have **** paper" while she did causing the whole group to have to wait (she should have looked before speaking but more importantly not been so angry about it). Every time we had a simple task she instead of trying to figure it out like everyone else she asked. Basically she was doing that annoying asking unnecesary questions every few min like that one overly curious kid in school. Its one of those annoying but not *bad* things. For example if they briefly went over the programs listed for tuition reimbursement and said that only those programs were available she asked about ones not on the list. The worst was after one of the customer service traning videos she started loudly ranting about how the guy in the video wasnt wearing gloves while he used a special machine to core/cute a pinapple for a customer. Aparently handling the plastic container was unthinkable without gloves. She started ranting about anyone who handles food should "blah blah blah" and if you are touching something that food goes in how could you not. GRRR it was a freaking training video and the guy never even handled the fruit. Besides Im sure as a produce section worker who did that for a living he was following all procedures. But to bitch about the training video loudly!!! She even asked if they really actually did that (cut a specific fruit for a customer even if prepackaged stuff was already available). They do that all the time and I think its good service. Grr

This company has a surprisingly long list of neat programs and offers aimed at community service or just general good customer service. Aparently you get a free cake for your child on their one year old birthday or something. She asked "why dont they promote it I have never heard of it and neither has anyone else at this table". GRRRR bringing us into it when all we did was express surprise over the coolness of the program. None of us had heard of it but its not like we would have a reason to know if we dont have kids or use the bakery. Besides Im sure that they wouldnt be able to continue the program if they aggressively told everyone who walked in the store. There is a whole information section right when you come in. Tons of pamplets and info on everything including all of the programs/offers. Im GLAD they dont shove it down your throat in line. It sucks having to listen to a sales pitch every time you shop somewhere. "would you like to sign up for yada yada yaday" is something no one wants to hear when buying something small at a random store.

Its not that I have an issue with her or anything but it just seems a bit rude during your first day to question everything like that. I still believe that companies are capable of doing the right thing and cool things just because. Its not every time or every company but there is no reason to assume that there is some major fault with everything.

I guess Im just surprised at how people will make a scene at the drop of a hat during orientation. I also thought the goal was to participate but not start asking everything little question that should be saved for later or even for your hr person back at the store.

Mine was boring, but rather smooth.. I didn't mind sitting through it since I was getting paid for it.e The main problem been was the fact it was blistering hot, and the air conditioning didn't work. The woman that does the orientation in my area is actually the HR Manager (Not a bad woman, but she shouldn't be doing the orientation).

Everyone at mine seemed to have half a brain and felt the same way, nothing dubious.

I can name one thing right off the top of my head that's a big no-no....don't ditch orientation, then get mad that you'll have to wait for next week's orientation (which I think is a pretty nice offer, if someone wants a job, they should show up for orientation, unless they are really sick or have an emergency to attend to). Then proceed to quit your first night on the job.

Another thing not to do: Tell everyone at orientation who will listen about how qualified you are for this job, then show up for the job (along with a few other people who were assigned for the same area) and spend nearly 2 months not getting anything and then getting fired.

I think every training class I've ever been in has had some version of the question lady. Mine was a woman who has multiple college degrees, inluding at least one masters degree, has been with the company longer than I have, and still has questions about everything and doesn't seem to retain information for longer than a few minutes, or grasp concepts that seem elementary to the rest of us.

And it seems to repeat with each class - there's always one person who is constantly questioning everything, and would rather ask than try to find the answer themself, like they're taught to do. We have a solutions tool and several manuals for a reason, people. It's so you can find the answers quickly yourself.

Another no-no is to up and leave in the middle of orientation for non-emergency reasons and not notifying the facilitator/instructor.

I've only had two orientation classes (well technically four, but two were "hands on" as in your orientation was doing the work). One lasted 8 hours and was video upon video upon psyc evaluations.... the other one was reading the manual for the company. Not a big deal offhand, until you realize the company is international, and has policies for EVERY location in the handbook. And it's not "handbook" but "handbooks" totaling almost 10,000 pages of single-spaced 8x11 pieces of paper (including other pieces for amendments that you had to look up).

The latter took me almost 2 full work weeks to go through (I almost fell asleep, it was self-study stuff in a cubical). One section of over 5 pages involved the proper use and disposal of batteries based on type and size (despite my department only used AA, and infrequently at that [only our walkmans used them ]).

At the orientation for the company I currently work for, there was an employee sitting in the back processing our paperwork while we were doing all the videos and tests and stuff. A new hire was sitting right next to her and found it incredibly amusing to belch out loud. The lady was getting incredibly grossed out by it and repeatedly told him to stop, and the guy just laughed at her. I was up front so didn't hear exactly what was going on till later, but she just up and tore into him when she had enough. The guy was asked to leave later that day, since he couldn't show enough respect for those around him to keep his bodily functions to himself.

My computer training for my old call center job was just awful right at the start. With 2 more weeks to go.

                1. Had the 'asked stupid/dumb question every 1-2 mins guy"
                2. crazy lady that after the third day thought the question guy was stalking her (cause he was driving behind her on the highway and he flashed his lights and passed her while waving)
                3. our training was to be about Microsofts software, no hardware training but this one guy would try everything in his power to ask about the hardwear at the company to compare it to his own, which he bragged about everyday.
                4. best for last - the trainer had put in his two week notice so the training class was that last thing he had to do. And guess what, he didnt care if we learned anything, he and the uber comp guy talked hardware most the day.

So starting the second week, I asked the trainer to wake me up when we are being taught anything I would actually need to know for the job and then put my head on the table and took a 2ish hour nap. Did that the rest of the week.
(training was scheduled 7am and im a night person so I was damn tired and if all i needed to do was be here then, well ill be here asleep

My Hersheypark orientation lasted about 3 hours. It's considerd your first day on the job so if someone were to skip out on that not only do they lose pay but it makes a horrible 1st impression.
Every orentation I've ever gone to I've paid attention to it cause you learn a lot. You don't go & you're screwed...lol.

How about falling asleep during it? I haven't seen that option on here yet.
