  • Sick...Again

Once again, I find myself with some sort of evil sinus-viral thing that kicks my butt about once every four months.

What's really scaring me, is that I have no incidents left in our attendance policy. We get seven incidents, and they drop off after four months. Well, I was late to lunch a few times, and I missed work because I double-up on my medication by accident, so I had to stay up all night to make sure I wasn't having symptoms of toxicity, etc. I also called off about a month ago. I thought I was at 3 incidents, but when I came back in, he showed my attendance, and I had 7 incidents. Which in my company is instaneous firing. So he tells me that he understands I was trying to stay within the rules, and that I thought I had several incidents to fall back on.

Well, he took the forms, had me sign them, put them in a folder, and he taped the folder shut and locked it into his desk. He told me this stays between him and I, and that if he sees improvement, there's nothing to worry about.

Well, two half incidents dropped of my attendance record, which takes me down to six, which is waaaaaay better than being instafired.

Well, now I'm sick as a dog, coughing, aching, blowing my nose a hundred times a day, etc. From what the minuteclinic lady told me was that I have Pharyngitis, which I am now seeing is coming from a Sinus Infection, but not a bacterial one, so no antibiotics.

So when I was talking to my boss about this, I talked to him this afternoon, and he was like "If you're sick, you're sick, and that's that" I explained to him that I didn't want an incident

Anyways, my boss was really cool when he started, he explained to us that when we called in, it's up to him to determine if it's an incident or not, basically if you could show that you were sick, or the situation was completely out of your control, then he wouldn't give an incident. But lately, he's going hardcore back into keeping people in the seats at the job, doing their work.

I want to stay home tomorrow and I asked about the incident, anyways, he said if you call out, we'll deal with it when you come back.

So any advice on the situation, my two buddies have given me two different ideas, but I'm trying to figure what to do. I mean peoples, it's like I'm between a Rock and a Hard Place!

Being genuninly sick shouldn't be a black mark against you. Especially if you get a doctor's note.
Personally I would go in with the doctors note and let him SEE that you are truly sick. He's probably being to hard because people are saying they are sick when they aren't.

It sounds like your boss is really trying to go to bat for you which is good. If you're too sick for work and he is saying that you two will work it out that sounds like he'll help you figure something out. Congrats on having a nice boss. Hope you get to feeling better. Can you get a list of your incidents? That's weird that you had 4 more than you thought you should have.

My evil side says frak them. You're sick, GO IN SICK! You'll get paid for the time you show up, prove to everyone that "You're a trooper!" Might get sent home for being sick, and joy of joys, you might cough on that manager The only downside is being less comfortable while you're being miserably sick. For me, that's not much of a downside, as I'm never comfortable when I'm sick.

I'm with Broomjockey, go in sick and make them have you go home.

I did a bit of research on Pharyngitis and the best advice I can give you* is to not talk very much and drink tea. A Popsicle will help with the swelling, and you can suck on peppermint candies to help soothe the pain.

I came about a hair's width of being let go today, I actually went in to work for half a day. He didn't give me an incident, but he could have if he really had wanted to, he was a little irritated and I feel bad, because he really is an awesome boss.
