  • Perks at Work

There are certain aspects of my job that I really like and wish I had at all my other jobs.

-Because I push a certain delivery restaurant so much, the delivery driver always gives me something off the menu for free. His choice, of course, but this is chinese food so I'll gladly eat anything he gives me. And I don't mean mere samples either. Today he brought me a platter (huge!) of shrimp fried rice with extra soy sauce and a fortune cookie. Last week? It was the cheese/crab wantons (called Crab Rangoon in the Chinese restaurant I used to work at) and spring rolls with extra sweet and sour sauce. Full orders of these, just for me.

-If you sell the last room on any given day, the boss (manager/owner guy) gives you either $20 as a replacement for "dinner on me!".

At the last hotel I worked at (Econo Lodge in NM) the pizza delivery guys would give me extra pizza cards because they could (I think that, secretly, half of them had crushes on me) and I would tip them very well for my free pizzas.

What kind of cool perks did you guys get?

at my current job, they brought in a fridge and they keep it stocked with sodas and water and such. I know it's because they want to encourage us to stay at our desks (I'm a programmer now) but, hey, it works. And it saves me the money I'd've otherwise spent, which does add up.

I've been at this job for three weeks now, and they've bought the office lunch three times. Twice the first week, once the second week. I was kinda expecting it this week, but they didn't. Though they did bring in a decent selection of bagels and spreads for breakfast.

The pay sucks (for programming, that is. It's better than most jobs I've had in the past) but the perks are nice

      - Normal jobs working on the weekend is the suck, the glory of my job is we take at most maybe 20 calls per day on the weekend thus the rest of the day is chill day. So 2 days out of 5 are not really work ^_^

      - Nothing like a boss that just lets you play games or watch movies in your down time

      - We work 8 hours and only physically here for 8 hours, boss does not have us come in an hour or so early or stay later to have lunch. People leave on paid food runs to bring food up here.

      - 20% Discount on Papajohns delivering to our building

We have an in-house cafeteria for breakfast and lunch. It's a small thing, but the guy who runs it is cool as hell and the food is good and cheap. Plus we have an employees only gym on the second floor upstairs.

My job (not retail) just started giving us unlimited drinks which is nice. We also get free processors, 50% discount for family to purchase. (gee guess where I work?). Once a quarter we go out for a full nice dinner with our coworkers on company time. They provide catering on holidays and whatnot. We have a gym which is really nice.

Let's see... the company I currently work for has free soda, coffee and tea...

However, one lesser known "perk" is that depending on your department, you can sometimes look at porn and not get in trouble!

For example, just today I spent about an hour looking at porn with two supervisors and another CSR!

A little background - I work in the Infringement department, so we were reviewing the listings for copyright violations and trying to figure out which policy we should end the listings for as well as deciding how long the seller should be suspended. In case you were wondering, the seller was photoshopping the heads of celebrities onto the bodies of porn stars, including some under-age celebrities which violates all sorts of policies (and a few laws as well)...

And for those of you who think it would be really cool to have to look at porn all day, keep this in mind: we have no control over what kind of porn is reported to us, so we get all kinds - straight, gay, and just about every fetish you can imagine (and a few you probably couldn't) and the pictures are often VERY graphic.

But at the same time, how many jobs can you get away with having porn on your computer screen and not get in any trouble because it's part of your job?

Too bad the pay and most of the rest of the job isn't as cool, but at least they provide free food now and then.

I get to be paid playing video games!

The down side, of course, is that I no longer like most video games. But I have to play them whether I want to or not.

                    Hmm.

Starbucks coffee machines in the kitchenettes, so thats free coffee. Free Tazo tea.
Sodas and juice cost .25 in the machines! Full size cans and bottles...

Just across the street there's a food court building. It's got bbq, curry, mexican, thai, all kinds of food.

Really nice smart people to work with.

And I'm a contractor, not full time!

I can't see porn on the computer, but the library has a subscription to Playboy, so sometimes we flip through that. And years ago, when our policy about patrons looking at porn is "they can look at porn," we could watch over their shoulders. Note, none of us did, but we did complain about it.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

                      I wish porn had subtitles.

Free pizzas from the pizza guy's cards they hand out.
3 weeks paid vacation (if an employee has been there for 5+ years). 1 year - 1 week 2-4 years 2 weeks.
Lots of our regulars drop off food for the front desk. I scored 2 milk shakes recently.
Usually a really great Christmas Party & Summer party every year. Free food & drinks. This year we had Prime Rib at the Christmas Party.
Lots of bonuses (they call it profit sharing): summer, thanksgiving, Christmas. We also get a bonus every day the hotel fills every room without noshows or walks (the $ ranges). We get bonuses every 3 months no one at the hotel files an accident report.
I am allowed to eat from our Breakfast Buffet supply, as long as I don't go too insane.
                        Free bottled water.

Too bad they dropped our decent Medical Insurance for Supplemental poo insurance.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised at the benefits some of you here receive. Too bad so many companies are cutting back on profit sharing, free food, etc.. in an effort to save money.

Here's my list: I used to work for a hotel and a small group from the hotel and the local chamber went flying in one of the big airforce fuel planes and we got to watch as the Thunderbirds fueled up mid-air. Two ppl at a time could climb down and watch through a window while the plane hovered not ten feet away. If they weren't wearing a helmet, I could have told you what color their eyes were. I also got to see the Royal Balet and my favorite was Riverdance. The groups stayed at the hotel and there were a few free tickets. I was fast and furious at claiming those.

Good health plan (not terriffic, but better than you'd expect from our salaries!

Membership in our org is included, which wouldn't be that great EXCEPT that we have a partnership with Entertainment, Inc, and get all these awesome coupons and discounts that way.

Train discounts--I can get a roudntrip train ticket to see my friend up the coast for $45.

Awesomest accountant ever. Seriously. The day the a/c broke (in July!), she paid for us all to buy ice cream. The time half the office was gone and those who were present were having a BAD day, she bought pie and ice cream, and told us to log off our phones for a while to eat it.

Cake every first Friday to celebrate employee birthdays. The cake is NOT a lie!

Our customers. Despite the crappy ones we sometimes deal with, most of our ladies are REALLY cool. Sometimes they send us little gifts, and on our org's birthday, they call in to sing Happy Birthday over the speakerphone. This year, one group even gave us a kazoo serenade. Seriously, how cool is that?

We get a quarterly profit sharing/accident free bonus. I think our next one in June will be at least $300 but I'm not sure yet. They just switched to quarterly- last year they did it yearly, so that in April I got an $1800 bonus, it was really nice!

They give us donuts on Fridays. We don't get paid for our lunch break but we do get paid for our 2 15 minute breaks. If we go a certain amount of time with no accidents in the store, we get stuff- usually of the food variety. They fed us burgers and hot dogs (that the managers spent all day cooking) a few weeks ago, and sandwiches a few weeks before that. We just had to start our accident day count over again so it will be a while before more free food, but it was nice.

Our boss actually just complained to the higher ups to try and get everyone in the store (400+ of us) a cost of living pay increase. I don't think it worked the way he hoped, but some of us got raises, and the rest got an increase on their pay cap. That is a pretty decent thing for him to try and do, all I hear is bad things about our company, but there are a few nice people working there.

My favorite thing, maybe not a perk but it is to me, is that while the store is open 24 hours, my department is only open 7am-10pm, so I never get roped into working too late or overnights. There are only 4 possible shifts I could end up working, and all of them are fairly decent, so no complaints. I was so excited when I got transferred up there from cashiering, because I got a 20 cent raise to switch, plus my current position is wayyyyy easier and less tiring. Score!
