Herewith, the second reason why I hate this time of year: We're expected to make do with a skeleton crew.
We lost two people from the stock crew to lawn and garden. Another guy left for his summer job caddying at a nationally-known golf course near here (he makes SOOOOOO much more money at that job, the store is just his winter job and he'll only work one day every two weeks during the summer to stay on the schedule). Somebody else from the stock crew retired recently. None of these people have been replaced. A new person was recently hired for the truck unload crew and supposedly our manager is hoping to get him onto the stock crew with us, but I'll believe that when I see him starting to get scheduled at 5 am every day.
We're down to 4 people to fill and backstock trucks, plus the autopull person who chips in after she has all the pulls done. But if nobody is doing pulls during the day--and with Numbnuts working more, pulls aren't being done, believe me--then they'll be huge in the morning and we'll lose the autopull person for most of the day.
Trucks aren't getting that much smaller either. It's getting to the point where we're having to tell management "We can get repacks done, we can get everything else filled and backstocked, or we can get paper and detergent done and bulk backstocked, if that's left for us to do. Pick one."
So from now until mid-July, we have to struggle by with our skeleton crew because management has no plans to hire anybody else. And before long Back To School merchandise is going to start coming in. Crayons, folders, notebooks, looseleaf paper, glue, pens, pencils...hold me!
And the backpacks! Good Lord, the backpacks! Pallets and pallets of them! In every imaginable color, shape and size!
In this regard, this time of year is worse than Christmas. We usually have enough help to get through Christmas. We never have enough help to get through the spring and summer.
