  • Starting my internships

Well, folks, its getting to be about that time where I am going to finally put all this college work to use and start my internships (AKA - practicums). I'm in school for a chemical dependency counseling associates degree.

Tomorrow I start at a local drug/alcohol rehab center for my first quarter of practicum. I have to complete three where I have to earn 180 hours each. I took my regular job down to part-time hours (32/wk) in order to buckle down and get serious about my practicums.

Unfortunately, due to the ethical responsibility of keeping confidentiality, I will not be able to share tales from this work. I'm sure I'll run into all sorts of silly, crazy situations.

I'm really excited about this. I feel good about the place I will be working at and the whole thing brings me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I feel good that what I have been studying and the grades that I have been earning will finally be put to practice.

Most excellent. I hope you can keep your enthusiasm in what can be a very discouraging and frustrating environment. I hope the good ones vastly outweigh the others.

That's the key in this line of work - avoiding professional burnout. The supervisor on site said the first thing he is going to teach me is how not to get burned out in this line of work. He's been doing this for a very long time so I'm very interested in hearing what he has to say.

as long as you leave out names, dates, times, and locations. I think it should be ok to discuss some of the crazy shit you see. I know that HIPPA rules are there to protect privacy of patients, but you can still discuss what happened, just not who/when it happened/to.
        good luck!

Yes and no. The thing is that if you know me and where I'm doing my practicums at and you are able to put two and two together and figure out who I'm talking about - that can get me in trouble.

That would not apply to me posting here. I mean, there are co-workers of mine at my "real job" (the one that pays) that will know where I'm practicuming (I just made up that word) at. However, they are not aware of people who are actually residents there.

Now, in the rooms of the 12-step fellowship to which I belong - then no way can I even remotely talk about my issues, if any, at these sites. 10 to 1 these folks are attending meetings and/or already know people in the fellowship. If those people deduct who I'm talking about - I'll never get my license.

The importance of your work rather trumps our need for entertainment. Sure, entertain us when you can, but remember your priorities.

I am glad you are going to be doing what you feel a calling for. And helping people rocks. We don't care if you share stories with us or not.

FOJK, I wish you the very best. That's important work.

BTW, I saw your PSA on a Saturday FX Buffy rerun. Wow, national TV!

OH! You saw it? That's neat! I hear a lot of people I know where I live who have seen it late at night - but not someone who lives far away!

In the "check it out" section, I posted a link to the website where more of my interview is posted. There's also one more chapter that's not on the website (chapter 3) but its on YouTube. They have my last name spelled wrong - but if you search "meth recovery stories" it'll be among those.
