  • Fell Behind on Closing

Yesterday, a customer decided to wait until the last half hour to pick up a cake that he ordered. He was told that the cake would be behind the service desk but no one ever brought it up. I went to the bakery to look for the cake and it wasn't there. Luckily, a coworker who used to work in bakery took over so I could continue my closing duties.

Another customer wanted balloons blown up and the store was due to close in less than half an hour. I paged the coworker mentioned above to do the balloons and went back to my closing duties.

Yet another customer wanted a lottery ticket even though I mentioned that the game was cut off for the night and the drawing was soon. He wanted a ticket for the next drawing. Since I hadn't had a chance to count the drawer where the lottery is rung up, I turned the machine back on, ended up selling him 5 Powerball tickets, and turned the machine off. I signed onto the register, rang up the sale, gave him his ticket, and put the money in the till which was currently in the cash room.

Eventually, all the customers left so I could finish out my closing duties. It was about quarter to midnight by the time I finished.

That's why I hate closing. When I worked at the super red eye during the holidays, we closed at 11pm. I was in the softlines department and the amount of work we had to to with putting away strays and organizing the racks was unbelievable. The worst part was before closing people would slack off and not get on their strays and bitch about having to staying late. We wouldn't get out until damn near 1 or 2 am!!! The latest I got out from closing was 4 something in the morning because we were getting ready for a visit from a corporate big wig.

Ugh closing duties. One of my jobs was working at a lab, checking specimens in. There was one shift, it was suppose to be only 8 hours 5 days a week. The powers that be declared that they were going to take on more contracts then the staff could handle, so it went from about 15,000 work orders to 20,000+ orders a night. Never again will I take a job that says “we are having a small overtime problem”. All of the stuff had to be done the day it was received. I’d go in at 8pm and leave at 6-8am, the pay was so-so, but sleep deprivation was a big issue.

Chalk up another person who hates closing for the most part. When I was asked to help with closing at my first bookstore job, it was fine as it was close to my house and some coworkers lived near where I did so someone would walk home with me if desired.

The game store...oy. Per the police, nobody was supposed to be in the store past 11 PM (safety, I shouldn't have been closing alone in any case). When a "coworker" (he used to work there, but was only around to run games) tried to help one night, I didn't get out of there until almost midnight (left me alone with mystery computer/printer issues which needed to be solved before closing could be done, lots of cash and a back door with a broken lock). I ended up having a police escort to the subway (officer showed up wondering why someone was still in the building, waited around while I did what I could) and then yelled at by the boss the next day for taking too long...well maybe if Dipwad had helped when asked it wouldn't have turned into a major issue.
