  • Something Smells Fishy....

I'm not sure if this is in the right area, but if need be, feel free to move this (for the mods).

Okay, Monday and Tuesday were my first two days at my new job as an Appointment Setter for a modeling agency's call center which is located in the mall next to the movie theater. I'm off for the rest of this week and next week I'll work Monday through Saturday. Since I started working, they have yet to have me fill out an application, W-4 and I-9 or any other legal documentation. Besides that, we only clock in and out by signing a sheet each day and there appears to be no other back up methods like a computer or phone. Besides that, after I had my first interview, I was told that I would come in for a second interview and be on the phone for a couple of hours as a test drive so to speak and that it would be paid. I really don't know what the pay schedule is (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.) since I haven't had the chance to ask my co-workers. Thanks for listening.

i have to agree with the title, something smells. be careful and cya, dont let the i-9 and w-4 go for more than 2 days from hire, the govment likes its money and will rip you a new one if they dont get the paper work. congrats on the new job, hope the smell is just some lazy paper pusher and not something sinister

Those modeling agencies are notoriously corrupt. I would agree that there is an aroma of trout. Make sure you speak to someone like a manager on your next shift.

I dunno. When I worked at The Carolina, we wrote down our clock in times with another co-worker watching so as not to screw the system. It was ligit. They just didn't have any software that clocked us in. However, when I went back to work there the next year (it was a seasonal hotel) they had the software.

It's not the software that makes me suspicious. It's the lack of filling out the appropriate gov't forms.

W-4 form is not such a big deal as the company can use the default single & 0 allowances for withholding.

However, legally an I-9 form must be completed within 3 working days of date of hire; therefore, since Monday was your first day then they are all ready in violation of the law. Would definitely bring that up next time you go in.

If they are having you hand write your hours make sure you keep track of them yourself as well just in case they try to short you on your paycheck.

Does smell rather fishy...just like the companies that the good ole DOL salivates over investigating and laying hefty fines and penalties for not properly following the law.
