  • Someone died on the job yesterday

I was returning from lunch, when I saw an ambulance parked out front. I didn't think anything of it, because while it's not a common occurrence, it's not entirely unheard of. People will get hurt or sick once in awhile, even in a "safe" office setting such as ours. So I went back to my desk, not giving it a second thought.

I stepped out into the hall a few hours later, and saw that not only the ambulance was still there, but now so was a police car. I heard a few coworkers discussing the situation, and I heard the word "coroner" in there somewhere. Apparently someone had died suddenly and unexpectedly, in the men's room, from what I gathered.

Earlier today, the company sent out an email that confirmed all of it. I didn't know the guy, he was in another department, and I don't even know all the people in my department of over 100 people, let alone the rest of the 2000 people in the building. But the whole things just seems so.... I can't even find the word to describe it.

It makes you think, about how we really have no idea how much time we have left. From what I heard, the guy wasn't young, but not really old either -- 50s, possibly. And I'm sure when he left for work that morning, he never even thought for a moment that he wouldn't be coming back.

I know what you mean, there's been a number of people dying lately that are really too close to my age for my taste. I think I want to go like Carmen Miranda, she came home from work, partied with friends for a bit, then excused herself to get some sleep for work for tomorrow. At 2AM, she collapsed on the way to her bed and died. I like that, no lingering, just here one minute, gone the next.

We had one time (before I worked there) There was this one older checker lady who was going on her break in the middle of her shift. My friend who knew her said he relieved her and when he went to go see what was taking her so long he went to the break room where she was at and saw that she was leaned nback with her eyes closed. He thought she was asleep so he went to wake her up and found that she had passed away on her break. It turned out she had a brain anurism on her break. It happened so fast that there was nothing that could be done.

When I worked for a window company one of our surveyors died. He was measuring windows in a lady's house, felt a bit ill, asked for a glass of water, the lady went to the kitchen to get the water and when she came back, he had died of a heart attack. He was in his thrities, so it was a shock.

It was very sad, but someone died in our parking lot. We used to rent the lot (right behind our factory building) from another company. This guy used to come throughout the day to make sure people were parking correctly, security and gates were working as they should, etc. Well, he collapsed in the lot due to something with his heart I guess. Only in his fourties. Someone happened to be looking out the window and saw him collapse, ran and tried to do CPR. But it wasn't enough to help. Really sad how things change so quickly.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

our manager just died on saturday. i feel bad of course, but she was so sick for so long and in and out of work that i didn't know her that well. i just hope this doesnt start another round of "threes". bad things seem to happen in threes for us. in the past 18 months, 6 people close to us have died. we think the store is cursed.
