  • Cutting off your nose to spite your face

A friend of mine works maintenance at Wal-Mart. Seems that she got a day off with pay cause she was told that she's not allowed to work with the other maintenance person even if doing so makes them do their work quicker & are able to do other cleaning stuff. They had been cleaning bathrooms-one cleaning the men's bathroom & the other the women's. Now I don't know about anybody else but to me this is not working side by side. BUT to the assistant manager-it IS.
So my friend was told this & she got pissed. She pushed her cleaning buggy into the backroom & somebody asked her if she was ok. She snapped at them & said..."Don't talk to me. I'm upset!" Her boss, the assistant manager, heard her & called her into the office where he said she was being "disrespectfull" & that she was being given a day off with pay to think about it. Now, in no way did she swear or be abusive other than the fact that she just raised her voice when she was snappy.
When she was being snappy, it was directed to to an electronics associate who thought it was no big deal. He was surprised when he heard about her so-called "punishment". He said.. "So now what, she's not allowed to be human?"
The other people in maintenance have the day off which means that TODAY, there is NOBODY in maintenance to clean bathrooms & such. The store manager has no idea what happened yesterday & when he finds out what happened then heads are gonna roll cause the assistant manager didn't take into effect that there's be no coverage in maintenance today.
My friend has been working at Wally Word for 3 years & works her ass off day in & day out. I think the assistant manager went wayyyy overboard on this thing.
    That's management for ya.

The more I hear about this company the more I wonder how these stores are staffed seeing how bad the management treats everyone.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Nope! Wal-Mart doesn't have humans working for them. They have associates and managers.

One of my good friends is a WM cashier and she was given a "D-Day" (that's what they call these paid days off to 'think about if the company is the best fit for them', apparently) because she came in 4 MINUTES LATE one day. And she'd called to tell them she would be late!

Wal*Mart's a hard company to work for, and their attempt to get out of the class action lawsuit from female managers sums up why, though they try to keep it quiet. In a nutshell, they're too big with too many management layers, they don't know exactly what's going on at the store level. I've heard of stores forcing the workers to work off the clock, others where cleaning 'is women's work', and yet the stores I worked at were well run and did a reasonable job of respecting the workers, and nothing like that ever happened. One noticeable difference is this area is a high growth area, they need to keep the employees interested in a career with the company, other wise they'd run out of staff with how fast they're growing out here. They're not necessarily a bad company to work for, I moved here from NJ, and where I was there, a high school diploma would get you a minimum wage job, ifn you were lucky to get one at all. Out here, a diploma would get you $6.75 (or better) at a Wal*Mart, and while you'd get less, one wasn't even required. Throw in some (not much) insurance, and its worth considering, especially considering what was available back home. Still, apply at your own risk.

A day off with pay? I wouldn't mind being punished like that.

Like in-school suspensions when I was in Jr. High. Oh no, you mean I have to spend the day in the library reading? Tell me what I did wrong! I want to do it again next time we're covering diagramming sentences!
