  • Wearing a shirt is "requested, not required"

Hello, everybody! This is my first post on this incarnation of the boards and first post at all in a long while. I now work in a grocery store, and the other day I saw a man walking around with no shirt on. I brought this up to the floor manager, and he replied that he'd already asked a higher-up manager about it and was told that the "no shirt, no shoes" policy is requested, but not required.

Since I've always seen "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" signs at most food sales/service establishments I've been in, I have always been under the impression that this was in the health code and not just an individual company policy. Of course, the state codes are so confusing that I don't even know where to look for this in them. Does anyone else have experience with this?

Not that the guy was bothering me, nor was he particularly nasty (though nothing for us ladies to swoon over, to be sure ). Just trying to educate myself.

EDIT: I meant to say this is the first THREAD I've posted on this incarnation....except I'd forgotten about my reintroduction thread when I registered in June! Please forgive my "brain burps."

As a customer, I wouldn't be thrilled to see a half-naked man wandering around.

Hygiene-wise, perhaps it's not as big of a deal as we think. Most food is packaged, and everyone washes their produce after buying it. Hands are dirty enough.

But for me, it's just a matter of propriety. I think it's a bit disrespectful not to get fully dressed before going out in public. It's like saying, "You people aren't worth the time it takes to throw on a t-shirt."

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

That was my take on it. Unhygienic or not, the perception of many people is going to be affected negatively. I didn't think of it as being disrespectful to the store as much as the unwritten rules of polite society.

Welcome to the boards! I just joined not too long ago myself after lurking for God knows how long...

I always assumed that shirts and shoes were non-negotiable as well. I'm still waiting for the person who decides to show up without pants just because there is no sign telling people they have to wear pants.

Some people just don't care. They figure anything they can do at home and in the yard is allowable in public as well.

It won't be long before everyone at the store is picking their butts, picking their noses and eating their boogies, chewing their nails, and walking around in their undies only.

I've wanted to try that no-pants thing for a really long time. But I'm much smarter than that.

Where is your store? It would kinda make sense if it was near a beach.

Gads, yes - wear a shirt!

At our store, our managers will address a man with no shirt (including the young man a couple weeks ago who thought walking through our store with a button down shirt on but completely unbuttoned - revealing his charming nipple piercings and racist tattoos) was acceptable. Nipple piercings not a huge problem, racist tattoos - serious problem.

Sometimes though, there are some women who stretch even my boundaries of good taste. I'm not opposed to having the girls 'on display', but sweet monkey fritters, WEAR A BRA!

it happened to be 5 minutes walk from a beachfront....

people came in to the store in their togs and towels!!!!!!!!!!

I may be a bit prejudiced about this kind of rule... basically, nice young guy with taut biceps, washboard stomach and sixpack = good shirtless. Ugly large man with hairy shoulders, back and belly, stomach that is not a sixpack but a keg, terrible BO = not good shirtless. Guess the same goes for women wearing cropped tops and lowcut tops and dresses.
