                lol, thanks. Everyone who I tell about this job makes some comment about fish eg "Eeeww fish?" and I find myself starting to get a bit defensive because I don't have anything to do with fish in my role - I don't even like fish all that much.

                I'm getting nervous about my first day now...they sent me some information in the mail which confirms my pay, & conditions of employment. But it doesn't say the hours I work, what the dress standards are, the job description, what I need to bring on my first day (i assume I would bring my bank details so they can pay me?). Should I call them to check on these things or should I go in on Monday just dressed nicely with everything they could possibly need - just in case?

                  When you went there, what was everyone wearing? If you were able to see it, that's probably dress code-- go a step or two above it for the first few days. If you didn't see enough people to get a feel for the dress code, a quick call would be a good idea.

                  Bank information-- bring it, but don't bring it out unless asked for it. (Who knows: they may not have direct deposit.)

                  Hours... that's worth a call, for the starting time, if nothing else! You don't want to be late that day!

                  Job description... was it fairly obvious from the interview what position they were looking for? If so, don't worry about absolute specifics. If not, well, you're calling to find out when to show up, right?

                    Hey guys! My first 3 days have been good so far - it's challenging work but I love that. I hate being bored or having really simple tasks to do all day long, it just makes me feel...well, unsatisfied I guess.

                    Anyway, i'll tell you a bit more about it later but right now I need to get something off my chest and ask for your opinions on this.

                    I still keep in contact with a girl I worked with from my last job. She told me yesterday, that since they 'made me redundant' that certain areas of the company have gone downhill & are very un-organised. Customers have been complaining that they are so short-staffed & there is no-one to coordinate dispatches (which was my job.) So apparently they have decided to RE-ADVERTISE MY OLD POSITION (with a slightly different job title) at a lower wage as things haven't turned out the way they had planned.

                    Tell me this - is there any law against telling a worker that their position has been made redundant, only to later re-employ someone in the same role?????

                      law? probably not. freaking retarded, yes. here in the states there are "right to work" laws and "employment at will" laws that are basically "we can fire you for looking at us funny". not sure what its like down under, but its possible they have similar legislation. personally i would savor the feeling of them having egg on their faces over letting you go... but thats just me.

                        No law against it. I would just take great satisfaction in the fact that they really couldn't do without you. You don't often get such positive proof of it.

                            As to your question, it depends on the local laws. I don't think this board has a lot of people with experience out in your area for a definitive answer. However, in most places, I expect that since they tried to do it without you and failed, they would have a legal argument that some courts would accept anyway. It wasn't like they got rid of you and then immediately hired someone else. If you were in a job with a union, you would have a strong case for being taken back after being laid off, in this case, but in an at-will situation, not much of a chance unless you could show evidence that your firing was based on race, religion, etc. (whatever your laws protect).

                            That being said: feel free to smugly hear about all the troubles they're facing because they got rid of a competent person, and the fact that there's a good chance that your replacement, when they find him, won't be as good as you. This chance is made more likely, naturally, because they're trying to pay him less.

                              I think there is a law against it, but they can work around it by giving the job a different name and offering it at a lower wage.

                              You would have to check local labour laws, though.
                              Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
