This happened when i worked for Lowe's a few years ago. The company liked to have a "customer relations" contest between all the stores. Scores were based on customer surveys and the like. Well somehow my store came in third in the company.
Pretty big deal right? well to reward us they decided to have a catered event in the parking lot and have a couple of vp's and the local news come and give out prizes like new cars and cash. Well to make sure our store looked good for the VIPs they sent us employees from other stores from the district to help out. so the day before the event, we have people from other stores putting stuff in topstock with the narrow aisle lifts(referred to as a cherry picker). One guy is putting a pallet up on the very top shelf right next to the main pipe for the fire suppresion system. Guess what? That's right. He knocks a valve of with top of the pallet. Instantly have a column of water at very high pressure shooting out. Did i mention that its an electric lift? And that he's actually up in the air on the operator platform? Yeah
. so he is getting drenched, all the merchandise is too, and now he can't move or get down. And we have a store full of customers. Utter chaos! First thing they did was take a roll of corrugated sewer pipe and rigged it to the hole to divert the water outside. problem one solved(at least temporarily). Then while management gets the water shut off, we all get to start getting the water already on the floor out of the store. Our weapons in the war on water? Brooms. yep. we got to sweep the water out. To top it off, the system used black iron pipes and had never been flushed. So not only was everything wet, but also covered in black scale. About this time the fire department shows up because the drop in pressure set off the automatic alarms. Even with all this chaos, we somehow got the store back in shape before closing that night. When the VP got there the next day the store was pristine. So while the associates from other stores ran our store, we all got to sit and have catfish dinners and have a raffle and speeches. Yay
. Funny thing is, the guy who caused all the damage wasn't even power equipement certified.
