  • When working on Sundays...

A thought I had for those of us who work on Sundays...

We occasionally run into religious nutters who tell us we're going to hell for working on Sunday.

Next time that happens, remind them that their priest also works on Sundays.

    Well if they are shopping at your store on the sunday and tell you that, you can always tell them that you'll save them a seat because;

    a. They are shopping on sunday, which in most circles it would be agreed that that isn't keeping the sabath day holy.

    b. They are forcing you to work on sunday so essentially they are making you go to hell, and it would only be fair to invite them along.
It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. -Office space

Or do what my friend Tom does in situations like that:

*stare blankly into space for a few moments* "Oh! I'm sorry, Satan's done talking to me now, what were you saying?"

OK, I'm gonna tip over a few tables here, but I HAVE to say it:

Working on Sunday does NOT violate the Sabbath, because SATURDAY is the Sabbath!

The supposedly-converted, sun-worshiping Roman emperor Constantine is the one we have to thank for the 'Sunday sabbath'. Sorry, Connie, but you didn't give me life, I'm not paying attention to you.

I've worked 3 Saturdays in the last 5 years, and only because a good friend asked me to for something else he had going. Hey -- "greater love has no man, than he would give up his life for a friend." For a friend, I'll take the hit; for the employer, well, boss -- got two words for ya:

Actually working on Sunday as a Christian does violate the Sabbath as Sunday (being the day Christ rose) is the fulfillment of the Sabbath and a celebration of Christ's rising. (Paragraph 2175 of Catholic Catechism for reference.)

That being said, good response for those saying anybody's going to hell is "do not judge lest you be judged."

My favorite response has always been "if you didn't feel the need to patronize us on Sunday then I wouldn't have a need to work on Sunday... so in reality it is because of you that I have lost my free agency to chose not to work today... which sin do you think God will hold in higher disfavor"
... this arguement works particularly well with LDS... considering in the LDS faith the gift of free agency is considered one of God's greatest telling them that they have just removed yours is only slightly better than telling them that they were removing Christ's forgiveness (or at least in the Wards I've been in that has been the general vibe... I could just be part of a strange Ward).

I always liked to reply "Yes I know. I am driving the express bus straight to hell and according to my pick up sheet you have a front row seat reserved on my bus."

That only counts for Catholics. Many Christian groups do not hold to a Sabbath, as it was part of the Levitical law given to the Israelites. Many do. Many like to pick and choose from Levitical law what they will keep and what they won't.

I've been lucky that I haven't had to work Sundays. Sunday is my day off and I get very, VERY cranky if I don't get my Sunday nap.

And even when I finish school, I most likely will not work Sundays unless there's an emergency when I'm on call. And if I'm lucky enough to work at an outpatient clinic, no weekends, no call.
I am no longer of capable of the emotion you humans call “compassion”. Though I can feign it in exchange for an hourly wage. (Gravekeeper)

And it can be rather painful, also.

I'd always mention getting paid time and a half on Sundays.

                            I miss that.

While it is funny to point out to people that you're only there because they frequent the shop that day, one day you may get someone who points out that in most areas if you say "I won't work xxx day for religious reasons" then legally you're supposed to get it.

Doesn't change the argument of why are they around on Sunday, but it's something to think about.
