So, small week, but I expect it. Just started, and my continued employment is dependent on reports filed by my team leads. Of course, it really was a "trial by fire" so to speak.
So on monday, Just as we were ready to get started, the central server needed for the upgrade went bust and no backup. Cancelled on sight, 3 hours pay. Sweet!
Wednesday was a different story. First day of a 2- day assignment. Wasn't so bad, apart from the idiot who felt he had to "one-up" every discussion he heard, which means he spent more time talking than working, and he just had to hang around me.
Yesterday just plain sucked, and this was confirmed by no less than 3 vets, 2 of which were the team leads. Why?
We were short handed to start with (12 recommended, 10 arrived) apart from the team leads, only two other people were vets.(myself not included) of the remainder, other than myself, 2 others were fast learners who worked hard, and one was physically handicapped. (yes it slowed him down by nature, but not much else) The "one-upper" was back, just as annoying as before, and the other two were just brought and started whining about the pay at the start. As the night went on, people left for varying reasons (all legit) and it ended up the remaining crew being myself, the non-handicapped hard worker, the team leads and the one upper, who was doing less work than the handicapped person.
That covers personnel. The work? Over 80 systems to replace, a good chunk having printers and pin pads (which adds a lot of time to connect) and a number of them having serial to ether net connectors, which with me, always took one nut with the adapter. Finally, we had to stack all the old systems from the two nights 3 times (which was roughly 130 systems nd a crap load of printers and pin pads) and clean up all the mess from our visit and the first visit, which was rack replacement and cabling. A LOT of cabling. I could have hung a 1 ton truck on a hook with all the cable, I swear.
Add to the fact of the issues testing (minor oops with a fair bit of work to fix) delays from server lag, server crashes, etc. And it was a long night. We finished at midnight. I was ready to crawl out, if not collapse, and I'm going to be sore for a couple days.
It could have been worse. Another assignment was only 10 systems, started 3 hours after us, 3 hours later asked to get a couple of people from us, and STILL didn't finish by the time we were headed out. I mean, I know more time on site legitimately means more money, but the job is a projected time span of 2 hours for 2-3 people, which is not unreasonable, and it was over 3 times that, and had to get 2 more people.
At least I got a good review from the team leads. One of them is going to specifically request me to help out with another small site the week after next.
