  • Long vent regarding what happend at work today & supervisor

I need to vent about what happened at work today.

I work as a Visitor parking attendant at a university located in the city where I live for the Visitor Parking garage. The department I report to, Visitor Parking/Community Relations, has 3 staff members: The department director, her administrative assistant, & the Visitor Parking assistant who makes the daily event list which I pick up at Dispatch before clocking in at 7 a.m. The Visitor Parking garage has 55 spaces. 2 spaces are already reserved for 2 university vehicles (there are 2 signs posted on the wall inside the garage). I had to reserve 38 parking spaces for several events today. When I got to work today there were 6 cars already parked in the garage. One of the reserved spaces for one of the university vehicles was occupied. The other space was not. Since no one else can park in those 2 spaces, there were 7 cars already parked in the garage. So 55-7=48; 48-38=10 non-reserved spaces available. In order to keep anyone not on the event list from entering the garage, the lot open sign can be changed to full. The Parking office has control over the open sign. Visitor Parking/Community Relations has to contact them to have the open sign changed to full. I left the director of Visitor Parking/Community Relations voice mail this morning when I got to work with the # of cars already parked in the garage (7), the # of spots needing to be reserved (38), & that at some point I probably will be calling the office to have the open sign changed to full. I kept a count of how many guests not on the event list had parked, & when 8 guests not on the event list had parked, I called the director to ask her to have the open sign changed to full since I do not like “cutting it close”. The Visitor Parking assistant answered the phone, & so I explained what the voice mail, the number of non-reserved spaces available (10), & the number of guests not on the event list that had already parked (8), & I asked her to have the director call the Parking office to have the open sign changed to full. She said the director was on the phone, but she would have her call me. The director called me a couple of minutes later, & I told her what I told the Visitor Parking assistant. She told me she would have the open sign changed to full.

    Then this incident happened:
A guest, who had been on the event list in the past, arrived asking me if she was on the event list today. I told her no, but at that point there was 1 non-reserved space available. The guest told me she was supposed to on the list, that this is an ongoing problem, and that she called the department she was going to, & was told parking arrangements were made for her. I told her again there was a non-reserved space available. She then wanted to speak to the department making the reservations, Visitor Parking. So I called the Visitor Parking assistant explaining the situation & that there was a non-reserved space available, but the guest wants to speak to Visitor Parking since she is supposed to be on the event list. She put me on hold, & the administrative assistant answered. I explained to her what I told the Visitor Parking assistant. She asked the director if there was a reserved space for her, was told no, got back to me, & told me she had to find other parking. I also told her that the guest wanted to speak to someone other than someone in the department she was going to. She said she would speak to her. I handed the phone to the guest, & she was told she had to find other parking. The guest handed me the phone & told me to call the department she is going to (which I am not authorized to do). I told her I was not authorized to do that. The department would have to call Visitor Parking. She asked me for the phone #, & I gave it to her. She called the person who had made the parking arrangements.

Then the department director called me, & she was pissed. She wanted to know why I told the guest there was a non-reserved since she was under the assumption when she spoke to me earlier that there were no non-reserved spaces available. I was confused. She also wanted to know why the guest did not park in the garage, & when I tried to explain why, she cut me off. She told me this has been an ongoing problem, the # of open spaces in the garage, & the # of spaces needing to be reserved. I always let her know exactly the # of spaces needing to be reserved, the # of non-reserved spaces available, & the # of guests not on the event list already parked in the garage when I call her. I was confused. I do not know what the administrative assistant told her. The guest never received an answer as to why she was not on the event list, but she told me she would go to Visitor Parking at some point. I apologized to her about what happened.

This is crazy. From now on I will e-mail the director so I have a paper trail. CYA.

Most definately. She's obviously not listening to you when you try to explain anything to her. If you could sprinkle your conversations with "as I said in the email..." she might not jump down your throat as much.
