  • wherein I give 17 cents cash back

    C:customer
    me:

    me:your total is xx.83
    C: ok, I have a check, I'll just write it for xx.00
me:so, you want 17 cents back?
    C:yes

WTF? 17 cents? WTF is all I got for this one

They wanted it to be easier to balance their checkbook later by using round amounts.

Annoying as the cashier, but it makes sense as the customer.

This sort of thing is in line with tipping a server with change to make the amount even on a credit card:

    Subtotal: $14.58
    Tip: $5.42

    Total: $20.00

    Makes sense to me.
    I work at Walgreens.

(I'm just tired of mentioning it every time I want to relate to a story. )

      Damn IECFB!

If I had customers who tipped 40% I woulda stayed in Food Service!

I'm "guilty" of this too - and I don't even balance my checking / debit account any more. Just a holdover from the days when I did I guess.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about this at my store. You can't over-write a check, period.

I do wish I could just change out the remainder of a gift card if it's under $1. No one likes carrying around a gift card with 21 cents on it.

meh, if it makes the customer happy I guess i can give them 17 cents. they weren't an ass about it, so no suck involved(hence the location) and I'll go out of my way to help a good customer

The customers always told us we could throw those away. I know some of my coworkers paid for lunch with 8 or 10 <$1 gift cards...no one ever got called on it, though.

I will do that also when I tip a certain bartender. He always knows what I want before I give an order, except for the first few times I went there. Oh, I do order different things. I usually tip him about 50% of the bill
