  • lay off? days off? screwed over...

I got to work today to find out that one of my night guys (the part-time one) was laid off. I was not warned, but this guy hasn't been pulling his weight and we have slowed down horribly. Now, I hate working alone & this means (at least through this crap economy) I will be working alone 2 days a week. I can accept that.

What I can't accept is that my days off were changed. Most people would just shrug and be happy they at least have a job. Okay, yeah perhaps I should. BUT only 3 other people have been here longer then I have, two of those manangement/sales. I am night management. The other night guy has not even been here a year and his days off did not change.

Having been here for nearly 7 years now, I would assume that since I begged for Fri, Sat off that I would alwyas be granted those days unless some unforseen circumstance or other people request days off. After the 6th I have Thus/Fri off. That dose not work for me because I have friends coming do town starting the 12th and going through Christmas and I already made plans to spend evenings with some of them.

The reason they have 2 ppl working Saturdays is because in the past those are the tough & busy days. Well, right now they are the slowest days.

Luckily the other night guy says he has no problem if I take my normal days off as long as he can always have his Sundays off. I put in my petition. I appreciate him for that, but I am still upset that I was screwed over my days off.

I'm going to have to say that you do not have my sympathy about losing "your" days off.

At my last job I was ASKED and told to put into writing the days I wanted off every week. Did NOT happen. Did I whine about it? Nope. At least I didn't have to work 6-7 days in a row.

I'd kill for only 2 days off in a workweek, and am happy with what they give me.

You made plans? Trade. These things happen.

    Changes happen.

We do not always get what we want.
    I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

You should be lucky that you have 2 days off, I have 4. this week coming up is the start of that. But it will only last until January 1st. Am I whining about it? A litttle. Am I seeking pity from everyone? Nope. I am just counting my lucky stars that I still have a job.

In the current climate I would not be making any waves

but I do agree it sucks

depending on your relationship with the person who decided this, you might want to talk to them about it and just ask why a person with senority was not given the choice

I had to go and speak to my Team Leader because of the way the schedule was for last week. I had asked for Wednesday off so we could have family Thanksgiving. I didn't ask for Black Friday off...I always work holidays to get the time and a half so working Thanksgiving was a given. I didn't even mind working Saturday, even though I knew that we were having Santa Bucks and the place would be packed. All I asked for was Wednesday so we could have one day with my husband's family. I have been with the store since before it opened so I have high seniority. I am one of two people currently trained as 2nd shift Service Coordinator and have 2 1/2 years seniority over the other gal who is night SC.

She asked to work Friday morning 4:30a-1pm since her son's birthday was that day and she could spend the afternoon and evening with him and asked for Saturday off for his birthday party. I didn't have a problem with that and even requested to work those two evenings. Another morning Service Coordinator asked to work at night as a cashier on Friday so she could shop all the doorbuster sales...that was granted. But when the schedule was put together they had me with Sunday and Monday off and working the rest of the week. Patty (the other night Service Coordinator) always wants Tuesdays off since her mom bowls that day and has to take her to work and pick her up afterwards if she works that day.
When I told my husband I was scheduled to work Wednesday (I had put it in the computer as a request weeks in advance and stated that it was for family Thanksgiving, but it was denied) he was very upset. His mom has been ill and she couldn't do it earlier than what we had planned and he had taken off the day so we could go out there.
I went to my Team Leader and explained the situation and asked her if there was any way she could change it to let me have that day off and work Sunday or Mdnday instead. She said she would see what she could do, and when the schedule came out I had Wed off and worked Sunday instead.
It still bothered me a bit that other people with less seniority got off on our busiest days but I had to go and beg to get off one day.
BTW, the gal who wanted to shop the Black Friday sales did and was supposed ot work cashier that night got her request, but was so tired that she could barely stay awake and wasn't really any use to me. All she did was complain and wander off. I asked her to cover for me while I took a lunch and told her what breaks needed to go out and she screwed those up...she thought she was waiting on someone else to come back who had already gotten off an hour before and was marked off as being gone on the board. Next year they need to just make her come in and work...you are in retail, you don't always get to shop the Black Friday sales.

I dunno I would be pissed off if I had to change my life schedule because something that was not only promised to me, but already given to me, was taken away.

See what you can do about still having those days off for your pre-made plans. You made them with those days already given to you as days off. Management may be able to still swing it for those days. After that however you may be screwed until they hire someone else though.

I have had a similar situation recently. I was supposed to have fri/sat off but then a team member (i use that term very loosely since the guy was a notable jackass) quit on us. So I have had to wait an extra few months until those days off became available to me.

Our business at Flowers Suck has tanked in the last three weeks and managements response was to post a daily 'substandard performance' list and fire anyone not pulling their sales quotas up to very high rates by the end of the day. They've let another twenty or so go for complaints ranging from 'takes too many unauthorized breaks' to 'told customer incorrect information'. Very BSy reasons. Lucky I've escaped the chopping block so far but it hasn't been easy.

I'm allowed to telecommute now and the second business drops or slows down all the telecommuters are ordered to log off the server and clock out. That means I worked a grand total of 10 hours last week. They also released a memo saying that anyone not making a total of 40 hours last week (that means everyone) would be ineligible for holiday pay for Thanksgiving. So we got the national holiday off but no one is getting paid for it.

Having the same dilemma here with the days off. I told them months ago that I had to have Wednesdays and Sundays off. Wednesday mornings I get chemo, Wednesday at noon I get a series of experimental treatments and by Wednesday at 1 pm I have a migraine, high fever and am puking. By Sunday the chemo exhaustion has kicked in. So its crucial that I get both of those particular days, the two slowest sales days, off. So what did they do last week? Take them away and give me Thursday, Friday, Saturday off. So now I'm working very ill two of those days.

I still fail to see how people can whine about "losing" "their" days off.

I have 4 days off this week. I work a grand total of 18 hours this week.

                Want to trade?

Although Calulu has a reason to be upset. Doctor's appointments/treatments trump almost everything else.

Well, when you've been at a place 7 years and were screwed over for years at first even by being put into housekeeping for 3 months & I am senior employee here now...you get back to me.

They fixed my days off. It was all a big boo-boo, luckily.

I'll definitely agree with the OP here. When there is seniority involved, unless a specific person is absolutely needed to work a specific shift (managers, etc), then time off should be granted via seniority.

Add in scheduling extra people for shifts where extra staff are not warranted, and I call idiocy on the part of the scheduler. There's no reason to screw with someone's schedule unless there's been a massive turnover in staff recently.

ETA: hippie, I'm glad it was just a boo-boo. They happen sometimes.

Yeah, no, I totally agree with you. You explained in advance that you need those days off. Those days are slow. You usually get those days off, and it hasn't been a problem before. I'm with you. That sucks.

Not enough to, say, quit, but it sucks hardcore. Especially since you already made plans!

I was assistant manager where I worked when I was given the option of choosing my days off. Only one person ranked higher then me -the manager- and even she couldn't always get the days she wanted off. And she's the one who made out the schedule.

Gee, wanna work at the hotel I work at now? They're desperate for people, it seems. Which is why they snatched me up as quickly as they did.
