  • Cieling Access panels

This happened awhile ago at a jail I was installing cameras in.

PLEASE, when you are painting and come across an access panel. DO NOT just paint over it. The lock gets gummed up with paint and I have to use my lockpick to open it. Over the course of 25 years and a half dozen coats of paint, the door effectively becomes glued shut, requiring a large crowbar and hammer to get opened. It took me over half an hour just to get one of them open so I could get in and run cable.

/My lockpick = 18 volt DeWalt drill + Cobalt steel drill bits.

There is a certain logic in doing such a thing to a jail tho.

Yea, but once you get through the 3/4" plaster/steel mesh ceiling, you still have the problem of getting through 6" of reinforced concrete and, since the jail is on the 2nd floor, getting down without killing yourself.

The doors are also fastened shut with security screws. Those are easier, though still tome consuming to clean out so I can remove them.

The inmates know that opening them and/or climbing into them counts as an escape attempt. The last guy, who was serving 4 months for bad checks, that did that got 80 months for attempted escape, even though there was no way he could have gotten out through there.

*Sadly, a true story. 'Cept change the hole in the wall to a cliff and you got the whole story.

Sounds like your place is NOT Alcatraz!

            Nope, it's a jail, not a prison.
