My co-worker, who works from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday as a Visitor Parking attendant at the university located in the city where I live had an interesting shift at work yesterday.
When someone drives up to the Visitor Parking booth window, you tell the person where to pay for their parking inside the school since everyone has to pay for their parking inside the building. She told a customer where to pay for his parking.
It is around 5:50 p.m., & she heard a loud crash. She looks up & sees a jeep exiting the garage, & she notices that the exit gate in front of Visitor Parking is at an angle. Because of the screws that are used to secure the gate, the gate does not break in half. The screws fall to the ground when this happens. Some screws stay intact. The customer in the jeep parks his car in front of the booth & walks up to the window. She opens the window, & he asks "Where do I pay for my freaking parking?" She tells him where to pay, which was explained to him when he arrived, but sometimes people forget. He says "That is a pissy system." Since he ran through the gate, she told him she had to get his license plate number & call campus police. He asks her if he has to stay. She told him she cannot physically detain him, but she does have to get his license plate number & call campus police. She calls police, & they come to ask him what happened. The police officer & the guy stood in front of the booth while the guy was explaining to the police officer what happened, & she said he used curse words to describe the incident. The cop told him to watch his language. The guy also told the police officer "But my car antenna is damaged. What will the university do about that?" The cop told him he has to contact his car insurance company about that. Since the guy damaged city property, he has to get a citation from the city police, & they are notified. A city police officer arrives & gives him a citation for damaging city property. Another cop arrives to pick up the screws that fell to the ground. My co-worker helped him do that. Since the exit gate would not work, campus police had to raise it so people could exit. But, is was hanging by a thread, & it fell to the ground while my co-worker was helping the cop gather all of the screws that fell to the ground. Luckily, neither was hurt.
The thing is this:
There is a call box at the exit gate. If the guy had just pressed the call button, he would have received assistance. But, there are people who do not want to do that.
