  • Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning!

Do any of you have jobs which require you to get up extremely early in the morning? If so, how do you feel about it?
I work 10-6, which means I get up at 7:45--not too bad. But several years ago, I often got shifts starting at 7:00--ugh!

I don't anymore, but I had some really bad time setups in the past. For 8 months a year, the fun was being scheduled to work 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM (which really meant I got out around 11:00 because the grocery store door didn't get locked until 10:30) and then have to be back in to work for 6:30 AM the next morning. Talk about not wanting to get up in the morning. Blech.

And those days were set schedules because it was the only 8 hour shifts available that let me attend all my classes. So before the 2:30 - 10:30 I'd be in class from 8:30 AM to 1:15 PM with a 45 minute gap for lunch. And, following the 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM shift I had a 4:00 PM - 4:55 PM class followed by a 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM class.

The 2:30 to 10:30 was M - W - F and 6:30 to 2:30 was Tu - Th. And I often had to work at least one Sunday shift as well.

I'm glad I was just barely into my 20's back then. Now, I don't think I could handle the lack of sleep without leaping over the counter and strangling at least one SC per day.

I'm so glad to be out of retail. So glad.

I used to have a job where I had to be in at 5:30AM so I could run some daily jobs that ate up a lot of network throughput before the regular workers got in. I normally got off at 1:30PM (Yes, I skipped lunch at 9:30AM, my choice, not interested in a disscussion of legalities). Once the regular workers got in, I became tech support for the rest of my work day.

I didn't mind it much, as I got out when all the stores and banks were still open, but not really busy. So I got to do my shopping in peace for the duration. I also adjust to odd schedules fairly simply, so I didn't have an issue with sleep, other than having to cut out RPG gaming on Sundays due to my early bedtime on worknights. Kind of cool to have the whole building to myself for almost three hours, too.

EDIT: One bad point I remembered, I was into work one day for two hours before they decided to close the office that day for a snow emergancy. Not fun getting home in that after fighting the freezing weather just to get in.

My normal shift is 5 am to 1:30. But now that the store is opening earlier for the holidays, on truck days I have to be in at 4 am.

It still beats third shift though. I can't sleep during the day after working third shift.

I used to work nights, started at 11.00pm and finished at 7.00am, that wasn't too bad, didnt realise how tired I was until I stopped. Now I work a normal day, but get up at 5.00am. With three teenagers in the house, its normally the only quiet time I get lol.

When I use to work at a fast food chain, they would often schedule me in to open the store at 4am. Being that I lived 45 minutes away, that meant getting up at 2:45am to give myself enough time to consume lots of caffeine and get there.
You want it when? Yeah, Good luck with that!

Back in the day I used to work at BK and would be the weekend opener...and occasionally the friday closer or at least the precloser.

SO I would get off at minimum 10pm to a max of 1am and then turn around and get in at 4am on sat and sun morning. There were also a few days that I worked open to close so 4am to 12 or 1 or so.

Yup I couldn't handle those hours anymore.

Although when I get real swamped here at the shop I will come in around 3-4 in the morning to get a head start on it. But I'm getting old and those days kill me anymore.

when I worked at the gallery I started at 10am... oh that was nice

when I went to work for the shipping company I started at 8am which meant getting up at 6am to get to work on time..... I had to be at the bus stop by 7am

oh I hated that part every single day... getting up that early is NOT fun!

Back in the day, I had jobs that meant starting at 6 or 6:30. Sucktastic, let me tell you.

I am of the opinon that I am at my best during a midday shift, like second shift and I utterly despise first shift. (I'm not a morning person, but I can fake it reasonably well.)

My job from hell for waking up early was when I was in parking enforcement... I had to be to work at 8am... sadly for the first 3 weeks I had to commute from Logan to Salt Lake (for those outside of Utah, that translates to 2 and a half to 3 hours with traffic)... so I had to leave Logan at about 5:45 (meaning waking up around 5) and get back between 7 and 8... oh yeah... waking up early, not bad, waking up early to drive 3 hours = suck galore.

gas station opening shift while in high school on the weekends. I'd work 4 a.m. to meet the various delivery trucks. yay.

right now, I'm doing opening shifts at my store. I work 8-3, not too terribly bad, but factor in that I don't have a car, have to take the bus and live on an opposite side of town? I get up at 4:45 in the morning, to catch a bus by 6:20, to get to the other side of town by 7:45-ish. It's taking some getting used to. And lots and lots of heavily sweetened decaf coffee...

My shifts have start at 7 which is seriously still too early for a night owl like me.

Thank God I live across the street from my job and can wake at at 6:53 and still get there on time.
