what a stressful day !!!!

i was counting my till this morning before the am shift gets into where i work and I couldnt believe it.....we had

1 ($20) bill
8 ($5) bill
etc....
etc....

and $311.85 in IOU....i was WOW!!! i was shocked

plus, i check this guy in and he paid cash so he gave me $100 deposit and this morning, i didnt have enough money in the till to give him his deposit back even if i gave him all our coins and bills it didnt come out to even 100$...my manager came in and wasnt happy but atleast i did the right thing i hope!!

Why is that much money listed as an IOU? Who owes the cash?

The hotel owes itself. IOUs are petty cash expenditures that are taken out of the cash drawer. Eventually either the hotel takes the money out of the bank and replaces it in the drawer, or if a guest pays in cash the IOUs are taken out of the drawer then and put in the safe. The problem being, as Azen ran into, is that if no one pays for a room before one of the owners can pay out the IOUs then there is the chance of not having enough for a deposit refund (especially when teh expenditures came after the deposit was paid).
