So for those of you who don't know...I'm the overall store manager for a store that sells undergarments, activewear, and pajamas....

Today I had a girl come in...ask for an application...fill out her name and social security (which application says is optional..due to the law saying we can't ask for it)...then she throws a form across the counter and says "here..sign this"

I grabbed it and started reading it.....girl replies "don't read it...just sign it" to which I reply "uhm...no...I don't sign ANYTHING I don't read."

So I read the form and find out that its basically saying that the girl applied for a position in my store so she can continue unemployment benefits. I look at the application...notice the only thing filled out is her name and social security number and inform her that no..I will NOT sign the form unless she properly fills out the application so I can look at it and determine whether I want to hire her.

She replied "no...I have no intention of working for this fucking place....I just gave you the form so I can continue to receive my check from the state..." So then I replied.. "oh....so what you are doing is fraud..." I place the application she filled out in a safe location in my locked drawer behind the counter and politely informed her that I would not sign the form...to which she grabbed the form and scribble her own version of a signature

After she left I called the unemployment office...informed them where I work...my name...gave her name and social security number and informed them what she did...faxed them the copy of the application and was thanked by the unemployment office...

Pretty soon...girl comes back in the store screaming the F word every other word complaining about how she was denied unemployment benefits because of me..and now she has to find a job so she can get fired and draw unemployment again...I just asked her to leave...

I'm not sure if I did the right thing or not by contacting unemployment...but it just pissed me off royally...maybe I should have just signed the form and let her go on her way....thoughts?

I think you did the right thing personally. People like that really piss me off . Welfare cheats really need to be stopped, as it stops honest people (like two of my friends who come from low-income families) from receiving their entitled benefits.

Why would you think you did wrong by not helping some lowlife collect unemployment, which comes out of your taxes and mine, when she has no intention of finding a job?

Unemployment is just supposed to tide you over until you find work, not become a substitute for work and its associated wages.

Unemployment is for people who are looking for work and havent found it yet! Its not unlimited, and in these economic climes more people will be needing it.

Kudos to you. Thats your own tax dollars being saved there. Well, and mine too - and I appreciate it!

          This.

I was on employment once, rather briefly. I got one check for a partial week.

What can I say? I really was looking for a job, and was very fortunate to find one so quickly. So out of the thousands of dollars I've paid into the system over the years, I got back twenty eight bucks and change. Eh, it's good to know it's there if I need it, but here's hoping I never will again.

No way in merry hell did you ought to have. She's lucky she's only being denied unemployment and not being prosecuted for fraud

It's folks like that who give the unemployment the stigma it has associated with it. Good for you in clearing up one piece of rubbish. You've helped all those who truly need it a little bit by doing so.

I would have called the unemployment office back and told her she screamed at you and told you she had to find another job to get fired from so she could get benifits again and has no real intention of working, just milking the system.

You absolutely did the right thing, and kudos to you for taking the time to do it! If more workplaces cared rather than just signing off the stupid form, far fewer people would get away with this.

You did the right thing, no question.

I have a friend who was fired for standing up for his principles, and has been unemployed since. That's the sort of thing that unemployment benefits are for. Not for scum who have no desire to work and want to drain the system that everyone else is paying into.

I second that. I'm sure unemployment would LOVE to hear about that.

I received unemployment for the first 6 months after being downsized. Some of the people who were downsized at the same time as me said that they were applying to places like Kmart and Walmart and giving ridiculously salary requirements so that they could continue to not work and get their unemployment every week. They felt that they were due a long break from working before actually trying to get a new job. Most of those people now have found new jobs. I, on the other hand, have diligently applied for 20 - 30 jobs per week for the last year and am still looking. Most of the time, I don't hear anything once the application has been submitted. A few send emails telling me that they have chosen other applicants. Now, my unemployment ran out 6 months ago and I have gone through all of my savings. I am still applying for jobs right and left and I finally got a call for an interview. At this point, even if the job doesn't pay much I will accept it if offered. It actually looks like a job I would enjoy, so wish me luck. I have an interview Monday.

They probably paid more for their employees to enter it into their system to add you, approve you then cancel you.

Personally, I'd have torn the application up in front of her and invited her to leave the store and never, EVER return. Once she scribbled a 'signature' on it, the form was invalid anyway - doubly so when she TOLD you about her little game.

But I like your approach better. In the coming months/years, the unemployment benefits system is going to be overburdened, even with legitimate claims. There won't be room for games like hers. And you can just bet that there's a nice red flag on her 'account' right now, so if she gets another job and gets herself fired, there will be a thorough investigation of the 'incident' in question. Poor little scammer girl's gonna have to get (and KEEP!) a job before too long.

I mean, seriously. It was too much work to COMPLETELY fill out an application?
It would have taken what, 20 minutes at most? I cannot begin to describe the contempt I have for 'professional' beneficiaries of public assistance. If someone has legitimate need of assistance, that's one thing, and there's no shame in it. But those that abuse those systems because they're too damned lazy to work -
they will find no pity or compassion in me.

Much applause for you. Good job!
