  • Power Tripping (long)

So today I get a call from a representative at the health department wanting to talk to the owner about some unpaid fees. He had been trying unsuccessfully to contact the owner and today was no different as the owner wasn't going to be until later.

The representative then asked if I would call the owner and have him contact him otherwise he would issue a closure notice later in the week if the fees were not taken care of. During this time I was a little flustered. The owner has an uncanny way of putting stuff off until the last minute. Not to mention I had an order to get to

    The following conversation ensued.

ME (rather adbruptly) Yeah all right. I'll try and get...
REP: Wait wait did you just say "yeah right?".
    ME: No.
REP: Back up here a minute. Tell you what, how about I send out the closure notice this afternoon?
    ME: ????
REP: What do you think about THAT?
ME: Look I told you I'd call him.

The conversation ended with me getting the rep's number. I called the owner and told him what was going on and what had ensued. I gave him the number and told him to keep me posted. The owner called me back and said he got the rep's voice mail. I then took it upon myself to call the rep back myself. He said he was away from his desk to issue the closure notice and that someone would be coming out this afternoon. I told him that the owner had tried to contact him. The rep said he would call him right back.

I don't know what happened but apparently everything worked out and nobody showed up with a closure notice.

I'm still brooding over this because my perception is that the rep, who has some semblance of authority, misconstrued what I had said ("Yeah all right") and used that as a position to throw his bureaucratic weight around. I mean seriously, why are you threatening me? I'm just an employee. You don't handle situations like that by coming down on someone who has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue you're trying to get resolved.

All day I thought about calling the rep's office or someone above him to
    A. Explain what happened.
    B. Let them know that I thought it was handled in a most unprofessional manner.

I'm still entertaining the thought. But since it seems like everything's taken care of, I'll probably just drop it.

Anybody else have situations like this? If so how did you deal with it?

    Thanks for your input.
    I don't like your attitude!
Yeah? Well you're not EATING my attitude!

I'm a bit vindictive. I would call and talk to the supervisor or head of his team.

They'd probably be just as snarky. Nothing like local government employees!

And the supervisor could be just as likely to back the employee against you, so both you and the owner could lose.
