  • Oh, the joys of innovation (slightly ranty)

Over the winter break, the Uni's Rec Center decided to further upgrade itself by installling new electronic locks on all of the lockers. This was to insure that every patron could could have a place to lock up their stuff (as per the rules) without neeeding t own their own lock. I think this was a great idea; it makes us look more modern and enhances safety. Unfortunately, there's always the backside of the pendulum.

The Rec is covered with signs explaining how to lock and unlock the locks, showing their simplicity. It is so detailed it even tells the patron to "put posessions into locker and close completely." To lock and unlock: press clear "C", enter any 4 numbers, press key button. Why can't people get this? Why? The locks aren't tricky, they don't involve some obtuse sacrefice or rhythimic dance to work, you just close the locker and hit 6 buttons.

In 4 shifts of working (12 hours total) I've helped nearly two dozen male patrons with their locker issues. A majority of the problems were patrons with incorrect or forgotten codes claiming the lock doesn't work. (I know because the locks work fine after I unlock it with the code overide key and check them with a random code.) Only a few occasions involved needing the master red key to completely reset the lock.

I hate that a cool new technology is being tainted by a few people's ineptitude. Hopefully in a few weeks, when the knowledge finally seeps in and stays, people won't be having any issues unless the lock is actually messed up.
