So its saturday morning, about 4:30ish am. This familar looking man pops his head in, and asks if he can use our phone. As our policy, I ask if its for police/cab.
No, he just wants to call a friend. Tell him no, and he leaves.
Moments later he comes back, holding a backpack and a bent can. Begins to wonder the store, and keeps looking around frantically. I finally remember where I've seen him, he one of those guys that shows up, and stuff disappears. We're not sure if he takes it.... (Well we know, but can't prove it
).
So I have to watch him.
MAN: "Is it safe?!"
ME: "Huh...?"
He then drops his can, picks it up and wanders to the door, looking out, then coming back in. He gets some juice, buys it, then starts to drop it and pick it up, drop it, pick it up. I ask him if he wants a bag. He says yes, takes the bag, then puts the bag in his pocket without putting his juice in it. So he is now wandering the store, dropping his juice and can repeatedly and picking it up.
Now he wants some ice. But he can't get ice because he is not letting go of that freaking backpack. He then pays for some ice, but doesn't take it, and leaves. He runs back in, dazed and confused. Looking outside, I see a police car go by.
"Its tuesday....hey, do you want me to call you a cab?"
MAN: Yeah...
Me: *picking up phone, and dialing non-emergy).
Dispatch: Blah blah
Me: I give details on where I am, what this man is doing, they ask if he is drunk or high, I say high, confused, and scared of police car going by, details"
Now I gave all this details in front of this delusional man.
MAN: "Is a cab coming?"
ME: *Blink* Yeah, just a couple minutes.
MAN: OK... *Wanders the store, dropping his stuff, asking if its safe for his backpack, where is the ice*
About five minutes later, he decides to leave, I ask him about his ice, he asks if I can help him get it.
So I get him confused on the cup sizes. But he decides, I pour his ice, and he again leaves as two cop cars come up.
They talk to him, he is nice, though delusional and confused. I get spartial looks and listens as some customers are coming.
Cops ask if they can search him, he agrees. They do a rough pat down, find something that could be a knife or something, I'm not sure what, but they just told him to keep his hands out of his pocket. He gives him their ID, and tells him he going to his sister that lives down the street. They repeatedly ask where she lives. As one cop is at his squad car with the man ID, another cop near but not touching him, the man starts to fiddle with his hat. Cop ask what he doing, he doesn't answer. The cop in the squad gets out, they grab him, and find that he had some kind of ring with a spike on it. They handcuff him, take it off, and do a real good search. That knife or something was just a spoon.
I did get to hear why they handcuffed him. The man has a statewide felonly arrest warrent for him. (Something like that it sounded like). Another cop shows up, and they search his backpack. Various crap items, but some needles and drugs of some sort. I'm not sure what as they didn't seem to like me watching.
So yay me. The cops didn't even talk to me, so I'm not sure if I have to witness or anything.
