  • Bite me economy!

So as far as I know, there have been no direct threats to my job with the shitty economy. But we have some less then awesome stuff going down.

    1) A policy is being reviewed that may require all employees to take one day off a month without pay. See, this may not seem so bad, but for some people, that is the difference between buying groceries for their family that week.

2)Less overtime being offered. I like overtime cuz it pads my paychecks nicely. But now there seems to be a lot less of this and it's leaving us with skeleton crews much of the time. This sucks cuz if you need to take a bathroom break, you have to ask someone to listen to your radio channel while you're gone. It's really a pain in the ass when you're doing the potty dance and you have to wait for the supervisor to have a second to key you up because there is no else to do it.

    3) Crime happens. Frequently. However, since the economy has started sliding downhill (especially in the past few months), it's been getting really weird.
Normal: Road rage incident dissolves into fistfight.
Recent: Road rage incident where middle-aged man follows 17 year old pregnant girl home and threatens to beat her, her dad, and brother to a pulp with a baseball bat.
Normal: Roommate 1 is upset roommate 2 is moving out and gets into a fight with them with rm2 shows up to get his stuff.
Recent: Rm2 shows up to get his stuff and without any warning, rm1's 5 closest friends show up and beat rm2 with golf clubs and one of them had a knife.
There are a lot more stories where ordinary situations become off-the-wall situations, but I don't want to sit here long enough to type them all out.

Then today I found out the SO got shit-canned. Even though he took a company that was $25,000 in debt because a previous employee was stealing money and completely turned it around. He made it a productive store that was earning money and has a good image with it's customer's. The boss who fired him accused him of stealing money and also cited the fact that he didn't answer his phone on a day that it wasn't working.
My SO has never had a write up or any other form of disciplinary action taken against him with this company.

Oh and I can guarantee that he wasn't stealing from the company, we have netflix cuz it's cheaper then going out on a date. He doesn't buy random extravagent stuff ever. In fact, he's a heavy smoker who hasn't bought a pack in several days because he doesn't have any money at the moment due to the week he had to take off when he was sicker then dog shit. He rides a bicycle/takes the bus cuz he doesn't have a car. And our rent check just bounced... So yeah, fuck off.

Let me see.. your SO's boss accused him of stealing money, yet has no hardcore proof? Can you say slander and libel?

This is where you lawyer up and nail SO's boss to the wall.

If he doesn't have proof he stole money, he can't use that to fire him.

I'd really just like to shake the boss. When the SO was still working there, he had all these fantastic ideas that would make even more money for the company, but the boss would never listen, or he'd just sit on ideas but never do anything. So, in my opinion, I think it's a blessing in disguise that he isn't working their anymore. The guy is brilliant and creative and knows a lot about the restaurant business, he can do much better. Or at least get a boss who will treat him decent.

Whether or not he was happy at the old job, that's wrongful termination.
And having that on your record (being "fired" for "stealing" money) can really hurt him in the long run.

File for Unemployment NOW. If he has enough documentation and records of Boss being an UberJerk, have SO take that paperwork to EEOC office and have EEOC crawl through Boss's records with a fine toothed comb.

Bust him. And don't let this guy ride roughshod on you either.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be sure to pass it along.

PS: Cutenoob, I had the mooch who lived on my couch and ate my food and wouldn't get a job. Trust me, I won't do it again.

NightWatch, just be grateful that you haven't yet gotten the call from someone saying that the hotel they are staying at is committing fraud because they are charging both city, county, and state tax... there's no way that in this economy there could possibly be that much tax

and yes, we did have someone threaten to call the police because we were charging her tax... then again, that would be going to a different jurisdiction most likely.

In this instance, I don't think the EEOC can really do anything, as they deal mostly with discrimination. Is your SO a member of a minority or over 40? Contact the labor board immediately.

Christ, sorry to hear that Nighty. You two gotta save up some money and move here to Denver, I'll treat ya both to some good local food. Although, if I remember I already promised you that, but it extends to your boy toy as well.

Hmmm my cynical side says the boss seems to have an issue with hiring "theiving employees"-wondering if the boss isn't the thief and just blaming others?
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Projection? Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I'm sorry about your SO, NightWatch. Yes, this economy sucks rocks through a straw, and it seems to be bringing the evil bosses out of the woodwork. They know that people are desperate for jobs and will put up with more abuse than they normally would, so the bosses pile it on.

Nail this bastard's hide to the wall if you can. It definitely wouldn't hurt to get in touch with EEOC and the labor board. I wish you both the best of luck.

Blah blah blah <---- that would be my mood

So the boyfriend has been busting ass trying to find a job since he got fired in February. He's had one interview so far, and they didn't call him after that. But on Friday morning he has an interview with a clothing company that happens to supply some of my favorite shoes. It's a management position, so I'm stoked. I appreciate your guys' sympathy.

So far we're doing ok on just my paycheck. I just wish groceries weren't so damn expensive now. I know I used to be able to feed 2 people on $40 a week, now it's roughly $80 - $100 a week for 2 people. I'm getting to the point where I'm considering going to a food pantry maybe once a month to make up some of the food cost. Though I likely won't because I know there are people who need it way more then we do. We get to eat at least twice everyday, so I shouldn't be complaining.

I'm currenty getting unemployment for the 8 hours I'm losing every week. It's not much, but it's better than nothing at all!

Lucky!! The boyfriend applied for it over a month ago but hasn't heard back on it yet. How long did it take you to get your unemployment??

I thoughts state had some kind of rule that said most any place can fire you anytime for any reason without having to even tell you what it is.
