  • What Do You Think?

Thursday night, things came to a huge head with the Annoying Couple (from now on will be known as Heidi and Spencer) after the past few months.

I don't know how many people total have gone to the boss to complain about Heidi and Spencer....I only know Old Man Bill has several times. But in general gossip around the production area, the general consensus is that pretty much everyone hates them and is sick of what they get away with. Tired of them getting up, not working, and talking and screwing off all night.

It especially pisses people like me off, because when I dare to work and talk at the same time (aka, running my machine and talking to my neighbor at the same time) Ann will give me dirty looks or go to tattle, Ramsay will flat up walk up to me and tell me to shut up and get working, etc etc. If I dare have a bad night, he'll rub it in my face that I had a bad night. Even though on a bad night, I get more done than Heidi and Spencer do on a good night. When I make comments to him about Heidi and Spencer, he says "Well YOU aren't getting any more work done by bitching about them, now are you?" and ignores them.

This keeps going on and on and on. Bill finally had enough Thursday night when Heidi and Spencer stopped working and were screwing around no less than 10 times in the first 2 hours of the shift.

He yelled to Ramsay "Are you going to say ANYTHING about this?" and Ramsay answered "It's only a problem for you and blas, so no. If you don't like it, go talk to the boss." BEAR IN MIND THAT WHEN I TALK AND WORK AT THE SAME TIME I GET YELLED AT! Not getting up and quitting working and talking....talking and working at the same time!

So Bill went to the boss. The boss said "Well if I had to do something about EVERYONE who acts like that, half of the people who work here would be fired."

He also said that he has already talked to them multiple times and that there's "nothing I can do about it" and what does Bill really think will be accomplished if he talks to them yet again?

Bill was outraged. "What they are doing is insubordination and you just ALLOW it? You talk to them and tell them to knock it off, they keep doing it, and you don't care? And the shift leads ignore it and you don't care?! They don't even make quota and you think it's ok?"

The boss pretty much said that he doesn't care and it's not a big deal because they get some work done at least, and once again, said "There's nothing I can do about it."

Ok fine. Especially considering when Bill got revenge a few weeks ago by quitting working every time those two did, and HE ended up getting called into the office and getting a warning!

So I'm done working this hard. They'll never see me get 150+% of production a night. I won't stoop to their level of not even getting half of quota, but I'm done going above and beyond. Considering Spencer is a TRAINER and you guys remember how much trouble I used to get in for the most piddly shit when I was a trainer?

And I won't stoop to their level by quitting working and talking. I will keep talking and working at the same time.

But here is the catch. If Ramsay or Ann DARE to come up to me and make comments about me talking or my production numbers, I will ream them a brand new huge asshole for getting ME in trouble but not others who actually QUIT working to go talk, and I will take my production tracker and stomp down to the boss' office, slam the door, and ask him why I'm still getting in trouble for talking when he has made it crystal clear that it's ok for others to STOP working and talk, and not have to get any work done?!?!

If I get brushed off or in any real trouble for talking thereafter, I will write a letter to upper management about what is going on.

Wow I can't wait until things get better so I can apply for a different shift or department. What a worthless boss and a bunch of worthless leads.

Ya know, Blas - I always get a case of the when I read your stories, especially about management.

Seriously, I don't know how you're not in a straitjacket by now!!

It makes me sick, and I don't even KNOW you!

"There's nothing I can do about it", indeed! That should go on your corporate letterhead!!!

Now you know the reason I suffer constipation, abdominal pain, why I feel nauseated so often, and why my blood pressure is peeking back up.

Ok that was an overshare, but for a while I thought I wasn't getting enough fiber and I was pregnant.

Yes, that's a direct quote from my boss and the leads. That's why I made that post in the managers section.

Some people should not be in charge if they can't handle it or be fair. When you are the boss, you are in charge. Not the employees. You cannot just play favorites like that. Even though I get accused of being a favorite because when they cut our hours, I got assigned a 3 day weekend and some of Ann's friends got a day off in the middle of the week.....I get in trouble all the damn time, I'm no favorite!

Shift leads cannot fire anyone or write anyone up, but they can get you in real trouble. Their job is to make sure that product is moving from A to B to C and that people are working and staying on task. Not certain people, EVERYONE.

You and I and others have wondered out loud a few times here about why good employees get reprimanded while slackers slack more?

This is it in a nutshell Blas. Management depends on the good workers making up for the bad workers. They have to get 100 units done for 200 dollars in labor. They could give a rat's ass if one person does 80 units and the other does 20. But when the person doing 80 does "only" 70 one night it hits the fan.

Common sense (duh) would seem to have them lean on lazy to do 30 for a change, but they ALREADY KNOW lazy won't step up, so they chastise the good employee.

        arg!

I understand that being nosy and tattling on others for stupid things does distract you from getting work done, and I'm not whining just to hear myself shriek like Ann's friends do. I am working and I SEE those two fucking off and it drives me insane.......it makes me not want to even give a shit.

Let's see what they say when I only do 100% of quota, not 150, not 200....

Yet like you said, if YOU did that - they'd be on you like flies on shit!

We have that to a lesser degree at my company. The weekend/night 'emergency' department is considered the 'special forces' for bad situations like weather/airline strikes, etc. We get thanked for this honor by being held to a higher standard than anyone else.

If I forget to document something in a record, there's 4 or 5 emails chewing my ass about it. Which sucks, but I could handle it if we ALL got chewed out about it. But no. Let one of the daytime, 8-5 normal shifters CONTINUALLY not document, there's 'nothing we can do' when pointed out to managers.

Cover your ass by sending a notice to upper management detailing just how much work you have been doing over quota and mentioning that this was to cover the slack.. That way when the warning comes down about you "slacking off" you can send it ahead along with your new numbers. When upper management investigates (because your boss's numbers dropped) he gets to explain why he felt it was normal to require you to work all the harder to cover those lazy asses.

When it comes down it, yes, my numbers and Bill's numbers (and other good worker's over-production numbers) are used to make up for the slack, no doubt, but I don't go above and beyond for people like that. I do it because I CANNOT just sit/stand there for 8 straight hours doing absolutely nothing. Chatting while working doesn't even make time pass that much faster. I need to stay on task and working at mach 10 because I choose to, for my own benefit.

That's fine. I'm just saying that should you choose that course of action to lower your regular output, make sure that when you get in crap for it, you don't sound vindictive when relaying the issue. Odds are when your bosses numbers don't meet quota he's going to get a visit from the higher ups and he'll try to pin his shortcoming on you. Having the proof filed ahead of time that you were the one saving his ass in the first place makes him look foolish.

Our daily production numbers are saved in the computer....so if anyone higher up were to wonder "Hmm, how did blas do Tuesday night?" bam, there it is. They can also add it all up and average it for a month or two months or three months, etc. Helps at review time.

                      *BUMP*

So last night, Heidi (the female half of the annoying couple) decided to pull what Whiney Brat used to do, and for the last almost three hours of the shift, just sat there staring at her machine and barely doing any work.

The woman next to me (one of Ann's fellow hens) and Old Man Bill said something to one of the shift leads, and guess what he did? Nothing.

                      A big fat nothing.
