  • Policy That I LOVE!

No, I'm dead serious here. I really do love it.

I may talk a lot of crap about my job, the people highest up on the totem pole, and some of the unfair and possibly immoral and unethical, if not illegal, things that they do.

But there is one policy that I agree with 100% and love it and never want to see it amended.

It should be noted right here that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift workers get paid holidays every year, such as New Years Eve, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Black Friday. Weekend people just get extra days off because *most* of those holidays are during the week. So we get paid for not being there

The policy is that if you call in the day before or the day after a paid holiday, you automatically lose your holiday pay. So, for example....this coming Monday is Memorial Day. If anyone on 3rd shift calls in tonight (tonight technically being our last work night before the holiday) and if anyone on 1st or 2nd shift calls in tomorrow...OR if anyone on 3rd shift calls in Monday night or if anyone on 1st or 2nd shift calls in Tuesday, they will NOT be paid their holiday pay. They will get a big fat NOTHING.

If you couldn't already tell from some of my threads, we have a huge attendance problem at my work. Don't ask me why, especially in this economy (yes, I said it!) and people calling in at such an alarming rate and frequency....it's pretty mind boggling. And, as you can guess, it really makes things difficult for the people who DO show up for work.

If you also couldn't already put two and two together....I'm sure that before this policy was enforced, people probably wanted an extra day off before some of these holidays to get an even longer holiday weekend. So out of fear that they wouldn't get it off, they'd just call in. In fact, people STILL do this, or at the very least think about it. The way I figure it.....holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day are on the SAME day of the week every year. If you want an extra day, request it off in advance and see if you get it. If you do it early enough, you most likely will. (It should also be noted that we DO have paid vacation hours that we acrue and can use)

I'm just curious as to how many call-ins we will have tonight or Monday night, considering that if anyone does, it's probably the same people who are already constantly calling in, who do not have any vacation time to speak of....who will get a lot of BIG FAT NOTHING. Muahahahaahaha.

    We have the same policy.

We get off for New Years (well Christmas to NY), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas.

If you call out, or take a day off (without spending a vacation day) before or after a holiday you don't get holiday pay.

I like the policy too, it's too easy to be "sick" the Friday before a Monday holiday.

      Same policy here, too.

I've only once ever lost my holiday pay, and that was 'cause I was sick as a dog, but wasn't sick enough to actually bus myself to the doctor, but far too sick to actually bus myself to work.

I have no sympathy for people who can't keep this rule straight. It's not like it's some arcane rule that ever changes.

I wish we had that policy at the swamp. But as far as I know we don't.

Holiday weekends suck rancid donkey ass as a result. There's a tidal wave of people requesting time off (10 people on the front end alone requested time off Memorial Day weekend--that's about half of the people who work up there), the managers have to reject some of the time-off requests, the people who had their requests start complaining incessantly, and then many of them call in sick when they're scheduled to work.

Glad to see others have the same policy.

Although I have to wonder....when people get turned down for a day off, WHY oh WHY do they always call in "sick"? Maybe if your boss is a giant plush like mine and you're one of his treasured lazy worthless shits, you'll get away with it....but I'm pretty sure in most situations, you're in trouble!

Oh, yeah, and at our shop, you have to work your full scheduled hours before and after, too.

If you show up, but take of early or don't get in on time and you can't make it up over lunch or something, you're SOL.

We have the same policy - along with if you have booked the time off, you have to work the day before and after your vacation to get the holiday pay (you still get your vacation pay)

Also, to counteract the "well, I'm going to call in sick anyway" crowd, our boss asks for the list of people who requested the day off, and compares that against the list of call-ins
