Fun with the overhead music

Musack here is set to managerial-inoffensive "Gold Rock" or "Classic Rock and Roll" or something.

1. My first complaint is the service itself. It's provided by Canada-wide Galaxie Music Service. This isn't a bad thing. However if you're going to go around branding yourself as a full music network, you *may* want a playlist longer than 40 hours on each station. This is my main complaint. And if it was taken care of I wouldn't even mind...
2. Some of this stuff is good and stands the test of time. Unfortunately some of it is only broadcast because it's "old" and the definition of classic seems to be based more on age (and licensing rights ease) rather than quality of the song.
3. The receiver for the service (and the volume control) are locked away in a manager's office. A manager who I don't report to and aren't even in the chain of command of. And yet it's main point of broadcast is in front of me all day long. Often times it gets quiet and I'm the only one working in this area too.
4. Both Surfin' Bird and Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow are on the playlist. What have I done to deserve this hell?

On the other hand, I was at the supermarket the other day and laughing to myself while I did shopping while listening to the Beastie Boys on their system. You gotta fight! For your right! To parrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrty!

Every few days that song comes on. Uncensored. I always crack up when I hear "Now your mom threw away your best porno mag (Busted)"... though usually I see the manager on duty making a run for the closet that the system is in before that part comes on.

Our Muzak system (and yes, it's provided by Muzak Systems) is always set to the "80s" station. I want to gouge my eyeballs out every time I hear The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star now. (technically it came out in 1979, but didn't get popular until 1980). I do crack up when Blondie - I Touch Myself comes on though. It's a classic song, but horribly, horribly inappropriate for a grocery store.

My boss (dept mgr) is occasionally MOD, and he always puts it on the 90s hits station or the generic rock station (neither of which are approved by the store manager). One time a damn good Rage Against The Machine song came on. If you've ever heard RATM, you know they cuss. A LOT. And it was uncensored. As soon as I heard the opening bass line I told him "OH HELL YES IT'S RAGE!" and he was like "... damnit, I love this song, but... I wonder how many complaints we'll get if we let it play?".

He let it play and dealt with a couple of complaints later. He had cranked it WAY up too, I was actually having a hard time hearing my customers.

One of our store managers always puts it on some weird pop station that plays a lot of Brittany Spears and Madonna. We'll just say everyone questions his sexuality now (... including me, and I'm openly gay). That station makes me want to remove my eardrums with a scalpel.

Speaking of RATM, I think my co-workers have been listening to "Killing In The Name" a bit too much. Particularly the "F you I won't do what you tell me" part.

That song isn't so bad if I imagine Peter Griffin singing it.
