  • Been offered a job...

...and it is at the pub I have just left!

The teacher training is going very, very well, I absolutely love it, however, I am not getting paid for it. I will not get any kind of income until January when the course starts. I saved up quite a bit of money, and that would normally get me by, but with Christmas coming up, my funds are going to be a bit stretched.

My girlfriend, who works at the pub, was talking about this to a co-worker. She's a bit worried I am going to end up overdrawn and with huge debts, and to be honest, it was making me worry a little bit. But I left the pub not only because I wanted to start my teacher training, but because I absolutely could not stand working with the drunken customers anymore. My old boss overheard this conversation.

Not to sound too bigheaded, but I am quite a good cook. At the pub, if a cook called in sick or they were busy, I could go in and help out very easily, and it was a blast. I was away from the customers, free to say what I wanted and had a laugh. My old boss called and offered me a job in the kitchen, part time of course.

I am very tempted to take it. None of the reasons why I left were to do with bad management or anything. It was because of the horrible customers. Now I have been given the chance to earn some money, do my teacher training and get away from the customers! And best of all, I won't be a manager anymore! No responsibility!

    Anyone here have any views?

    Hmmmm...

I'd go for it, though I'd make it very clear to all your coworkers that if they start treating you as management again, or ask you to help out at the bar, you will kick them very hard in the shins.

As long as you get to stay in the kitchen, no one ever wants to complain to the cook and they don't think you will take care of all their problems, then it might not be a bad idea. But if they (management, co-workers, the punters) try to lead you back behind the bar or out to deal with the problem children, then make sure you have a very firm foot on the ground telling them no. Make it very clear with the boss that you will only work in the kitchen. I'm a little concerned that they might get totally slammed and want to pull you back behind the bar. As long as yuo make it well knwon that you will not do tht, then go for it. You like the people you worked with there and you like the cooking. So why not?

Hey, go for it! It may be part-time, but at least you don't have to deal with drunk jackasses anymore!

I say go for it. Sounds like they're more than flexible, which is terrific and you can earn some extra cash. And we get more stories, so that's a bonus win!

Death got banned, but you just reminded me of a run in I had with him a couple of weeks ago! I must remember to post it on sightings.

I think I will go for it, but I have made it clear that I only want to go in the kitchen. I told my boss I am completely burnt out from dealing with so many idiots.

I think you should try it; you have NOTHING to lose. You could always quit again.

I agree you should go for it. Since the boss offered it to you that actually gives you the power to lay down your conditions (no bartending, no managing) and earn some money doing what you like.

Lol - if they try to pull you out to help out the bar, tell them it's triple time pay for the entire night, even if they only need you 10 minutes (and get it in writing). they'll decide they dont need you that badly <giggle>

Well I've taken the job and my first shift it tomorrow. A five hour shift! Bliss! When I was a manager my shifts were at least eight hours long, most of them ten hours.

And now at least I have the security of knowing that no matter how busy or stressful it gets in the kitchen, I will not have the SC's bitching at me.

And now I am going to start on my Death sighting

I'm glad you have a job that you should enjoy.

I love being in projection because I am away from the customers and lazy-ass co-workers. But I get to work with the guys and gals I like, and didn't have the stress of moving jobs.

I hope it works out for you.

Had my first shift back last night. It was so nice being locked away in the kitchen away from the customers! And for the last two hours of my shift there wasn't a single food order so I spent it quite happily texting on my phone and playing on my nintendo DS!

I walked out the kitchen to grab the mop bucket, and one of the regulars spotted me. "What were YOU doing in THERE?!?" he shrieked.

A couple of co-workers didn't know I was going back. They got quite a shock when they walked in the kitchen and saw me behind the line!
