  • I hate open enrollment

Just got my benefits materials, and tried (and failed) to apply for benefits for next year, because I can't remember my password. I got locked out of the system because I made three unsuccessful logon attempts, which obviously means I'm a hacker. I can try again in half an hour. Screw it. I'm going to bed instead.

I mean, I only do enrollment once every year. I have no other reason to use that particular website.

This is going to sound horribly un-PC of me, but I make no apologies for saying it: I'll gladly take the loss of a few trees over having to "go green" and do everything via the computer. At least then I'd have access to my own information without having to jump through a thousand blazing security hoops.

Shit, I still can't view my pay statements online because ADP somehow thinks I'm an "unauthorized user" every time I log in with the user name I was assigned and the password I created. I have no clue how much vacation time I have left, and if I can't get that working I won't know until we get to the end of January and I have to use my remaining time or else lose it. I can't even get time to get with a manager and have them walk me through it, to see if I'm entering something wrong or there's a bug with the system.

I think I'm going to have to keep a notebook with all my passwords and the websites they go to. I know you're not supposed to do that, but that's the only way I'll be able to do anything.

Got to the end of my thirty minutes, or so I thought, tried again, and got locked out again for another 30 minutes.

    F*** this.

I could call corporate HR, but it seems I have to do that every year and I bet they're sick of hearing my voice already.

I have direct deposit, so I thought going electronic wouldn't bother me. Until I realized I have no idea how much vacation/personal time I have (we use it or lose it) and I can't tell if I'm getting the correct hours and pay deductions. I could ask our HR department, except they work regular 9-5 hours and this is my second job. Which means I don't start work until 6pm or on the weekend. In order for me to access things at work, I have to be clocked in. Which means I can't look at anything unless I'm scheduled to work and management isn't too happy with me sitting on the computer trying to figure things out vs. being on the floor running register.

Tried the "Forgot my password" link and still had to answer a bunch of security questions.

Didn't get them right. Got locked out again.

So I guess I have to call up HR AGAIN and humbly beg them to reset my password AGAIN. Either that or give up on benefits and I'm not about to do that.

Whoever thought of making everything paper-less and web-based ought to be dragged out into the street and shot (not literally of course). If I'm having such a hard time with this, how are the people who don't have computers at home managing?

The last open enrollment I did was just a quick over the phone thing which, in my opinion was the best way to do it. They did offer online enrollment but the website was like the most confusing thing I'd ever seen.

I keep a word file on my thumb drive for all the passwords I don't use often enough to remember.

Not exactly safe but a lot easier than trying to go through that all the time.

                More aggravation

Seriously, I'm ready to bash my head against a wall until I can no longer feel anything.

I actually got some time today to sit down at a computer at work with a manager. It turns out I am not the only person who has a problem with web pay statements. She told me about 20 fellow employees are having trouble. So right away that should tell you the company rushed into this very half-assed.

She suggested I change my password. I tried to do so several times. Each time it was rejected because of a "prohibited sequence" or some such bullshit. I have no idea what constitutes a "prohibited sequence" to the fine folks at ADP.

I just sat down to try it again. It says I exceeded the maximum number of attempts to reset my password, so I won't be able to do it on the computer, because remember, I am a hacker.

So that means the next time I get some free time at work, I have to get with a manager again, call the help(less) desk, and hope I can remember enough information so that they'll help me get my password reset or do whatever so I can actually view my own pay statements.

All this because my employer hopped on the "green" bandwagon without considering what the impacts to the employees would be when they did so.

Now I'm going to call corporate HR and hope I can get registered for my benefits. I'm sure that will be a lot of fun.

EDIT--Just finished signing up for benefits. The person at corporate HR was very nice and things went smoothly once I got my password changed.

Our passwords expire after 90 days or so and we have to come up with a new one every 3 months. You can't use one you've used before either and it has to be at least 7 characters but no more than 8. Also has to include numbers and letters. It's a nightmare trying to come up with a new password all the time and even more of a nightmare to try to remember it when you don't use it that often.

                  Total PITA!

I forget where I read it but there was an article saying that having all these requirements on passwords and making people change them frequently is actually making systems less secure because people end up having to write them down or making simpler and easier to remember passwords.

Do we work for the same company? Ours is starting now, too.

My password is the brand name of the monitor, and then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc...

We have to change passwords often way too often. This is for intranet stuff, too.

The only way to log in is to be physically sitting in front of my computer anyways.

Our system at work is set up like this, too - very much a PITA. I've taken to using the same word and just going up a number (Example01, Example02, etc). Not the best thing to do, I guess, but at least I remember the password without having to write it down.

I feel kinda bad myself. I'm a tech guy, and have so many damned different passwords.... I have to keep a text file with the least used stuff.... It is horrible, but when you have around 20 different logins JUST FOR WORK, you have to do something.
