  • Joy. Yet ANOTHER thing to deal with.

    So.

I think this is the most I've posted in the main forums in...um....ever.

Today, the internet cut out. Just...stopped. We're with a particular DSL company, so I called up tech support after 20 minutes and a modem reboot, just in case there was an outage, and if not, so we could get some line tests.

Turns out the main wire from modem to wall is busted. AND it's far too long. 10ft? Something like that. I am *not* the one who set up the system, but now I get to fix it.

With new cords. And a reorganization of wires.

Oh, and did I mention I was on the phone for about two hours? Because their systems were overloaded, thanks to a couple of local outages.

    *cries*

My brain hurts. And I still have to stock 8 cases of wine, and I have to do all the paperwork from this week. Make it stop, please? I'm going to be here till 11pm tonight...especially since I have to figure out how we managed to close the till short last night. Doesn't seem to be a valid reason.

Is it time to go to my family's place for Day-of-Food now?

      *headdesk*

This is what they get for not consulting a professional when they were renovating the store.

All the access points for the DSL lines? IN THE WALL.

Not on the wall. Not on the ceiling. Not even on the floor. Nope. INSIDE the wall.

So instead of just being able to test the line, determine if the line is bad, or if the connection point is bad, they have to run an entirely new line all the way along the OUTSIDE of the building, then bring it in at a totally different spot from the rest of the wires. Which is going to cause an insane amount of trouble.

      *whimpers*

And here I am, trying to deal with this while high on cold medicine and medicated tea. Stupid cold. *sniffle*

If I were there I'd give you some in person. *also offers hugs*

They're crazy to leave the access points in the wall. Yipe.

There's this really nifty stuff - it's skirting boards. The stuff you put along the bottom of walls. Except it's hollow, and has separated spaces to run cabling.

Your electrician runs the full-power power in one section, and puts power points in. He/she, or your data cabler, runs the network cables in another section (separate sections cause of interference) and installs data connection points.

When (not if) you need changes, you just slip the covers off and adjust the cabling. No damage to walls required.
          Seshat's self-help guide:
          1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
          2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
          3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
          4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Over here it's known as "trunking". It's probably available in skirting-board form if you look hard enough.
