  • "WOW!!! You're OLD!!!"

Ah.....the innocence of very young children....

Once again I found myself covering the register, when a guy came through with his 5 year old daughter. I was ringing him out while this conversation took place.

    Daughter: Hi!

    Me: Hi!

D: You want to know something?

    Me: What?

    D: On Novemeber 22nd, I turned FIVE!!!

Me: Five! Hey, can you guess how old I turned on September 14th?

    D: No....

    Me: Twenty-SEVEN!

    D: WOW!!!! You're OLD!!!!!!

Me: Well, one day soon, you'll be 27 and you won't think it's that old.

    Father: That's absolutely right!

    D: My name's Alexis.

Me: My name is Dave. You have a Merry Christmas, Alexis!

    Alexis: Merry Christmas, Dave!

    And they left.

      That is really cute.

I used to think that my Year 5 teacher was old....(she was about that age) and I was only 9!

I did that to a coworker. He mistook my calculator for a cellphone and told me that he thought it was "so 1985." I then said I wasn't born back then. I make them all feel old.

That reminds me of the family that moved next door to me and my son, back in my "single father" days. I was 27 at the time, and he was about 2 1/2.

The family that moved in was a single mother with four girls. The youngest was a year older than my son, and I think the oldest was 8 or 9. They were all very chatty, but the oldest one was the most talkative. While her sisters were playing with my son, she started talking to me. This is how the conversation went:

                Her: How old are you?

                Me: 27.

                Her: Wow! Are you old?

                Me (grumbling slightly): Not yet.

                Her: Our mom's old. She's 35!

You could have told her all the best peoples birthdays are on 22nd of November.I turned 48 then, so I am decrepit on that reckoning.
