  • Blue Hat Lady is outdone

I don't think I've ever referred to her as this on here, though I'm pretty sure she's shown up in some of my SC tales once or twice. We have a regular we call the Blue Hat Lady, who comes in about twice a week. The name comes from the fact that she almost invariably wears a blue felt hat with a blue flower on it. But what she's really known for are her coupon buys. Blue Hat Lady never pays full price for anything, and I've seen her knock about 80-90% of the cost of her purchase with her coupons.

But today on UScan, another customer outdid her, getting her entire order free aside from sales tax thanks to having a coupon for each of her 33 items. Here's how it worked:

    Nestle Drink: 1.79
Kroger Plus Discount: -0.79 (sale price was $1)
    Manufacturer's Coupon: -0.50
Bonus Coupon: -0.50 (our computer automatically doubles any non-store coupons up to 50 cents)
    Final price: $0

I checked to make sure, and there were no limits on the coupons aside from expiration date (a month away still) and the obvious "one per item purchased" rule.

Here's a copy of her receipt that I typed up (minus any identifying information like store number): (link)

I had a friend who used to do that; spent a couple hours in the store, brought her husband and grandson to help, only bought stuff she had coupons for. She got a lot of stuff free. Stores in California double coupons, but they don't do that here.

Did you check to make sure that there were no "do not double" restrictions on them? We had an issue of the u-scans doubling coupons up to a dollar when there was that restriction. I forget what we had to do to stop it.

This is why i shop Fry's (Kroger) here in Phoenix, so far my best is $135 in groceries after $128, and ifn i'd not bought the three items that they didn't accept coupons for (they were taking competitor coupons that, but only for true competitors, not Total Wine nor Walgreens), i would've saved more than i paid.,

Damn, I am impressed ... having dietary and health issues I tend to have to get raw materials and make my foods, and coupons for basic meat, veggies and so forth are very difficult to get, usually it is buy this prepared crap and get this extra little raw material needed to make <boxbash> like some sort of soup mix to get sour cream, or multipack of condiments that sucks to get 1 pound of some beast parts to grill as a picknic special. I do clean up [heh] on cleaning and laundry supplies though =)

I did score a great connection here in New England area of the US - I dont believe this is fratching, but if so I apologize in advance...

Serve New England is a food bank with a difference, it is not hinged upon your income, but on your volunteering to help others in need ... you do a few hours service for people in need, and you get to purchase various food baskets at a fairly nice price. They provide raw materials instead of lots of boxed stuff, so it is a bit healthier than some food banks foods. It works out nicely with our doing stuff like habitat for humanity that we would normally be doing anyway.

That sounds like a really neat concept on the food bank. Now I'm wondering if they have anything like that in this neck of the woods.

No idea, contact them and ask?

We got the turkey package for thanksgiving, and added some more goodies of our own. Very nice, didn't have to worry about getting a turkey as we already knew it was on order.
