  • Black Friday Was Dead For Me

First things first. All of you in retail who had to endure the hell that is Black Friday, you have my respect. And those of you who were forced to give up your holiday in order to put money in the cash drawer instead of spend time with your loved ones, I thank you.

In auto repair, Thanksgiving is a day off. Many shops close the day after as well. Mine was only closed on Thursday. I hope that after today, and after learning that none of the other shops in town did much of anything, that my boss will finally decide to make Thanksgiving a 4-day weekend. Frankly I don't care if he pays for the extra day or not, I can take a 1-day-short check once a year.

We sold a few tires and that was it. I didn't even power up the alignment machine. Matter of fact, I did not touch a customer's vehicle at all today. The boss decided to close the doors at 1530 and still paid us for a full day.

The only thing I actually did do today was some long-overdue maintenance on our brake lathe. And of course I did it with the boss standing over my shoulder micromanaging the whole procedure and trying to argue about everything. He finally figured out he was pissing me off and retreated to the office for a while. When he came back out, it was round two and I think I got through to him.

I stripped the old girl down and spent hours cleaning, examining, and adjusting. Turned out all that was necessary was to make about a 2mm adjustment to one shaft and tighten down a couple of set screws. Then put some fresh grease on the parts that needed it and reassemble.

He didn't come out and admit that I was right, but he did admit that the lathe was now functioning correctly.

About mid-afternoon he was on the phone to our parts house asking about how much everyone else in town was ordering. Jack shit was the answer. About 30 minutes later he made the call to close it down and go home for the weekend.

The shop down the street was closed. There was almost no traffic on our street, which is normally very busy. In fact, most independent shops in town were closed for the day. Only the bottom feeder chain stores like Firestone and their spawn were open and even they weren't seeing much business.

I wish he'd just close for a 4-day weekend on Thanksgiving. People either want to go do their Black Friday shopping or just take the day off. Or go hunting like his fat lazy and stupid son does. At least the retard wasn't there today to stir up any shitstorms.

Monday is gonna be fun. I've been there for over 4 years now and this morning for the first time I set up a Christmas tree in my bays. It's a small fiber optic tree I bought about 10 years ago. Not much use for it at home because no one ever comes to my apartment. So I took it to work and set it up on my toolbox. The boss is a Christian but has never put up any Christmas decorations so this is a first. I have no doubt that come Monday morning, Fat Boy will see the tree, come out and stare at it, then go in to his dad and try to start something. He always does.

My family owns a car shop and my dad always closes it on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. That way the guys can spend that time with family.
The added bonus is my dad and mom can go somewhere to visit family or host the dinner if everyone goes to their house. This year they (along with my bro on leave from military school) came here to visit with me and my sister and her family.

Eta: my dad's not a mechanic, he works in the office and does the paperwork... When we don't have an actually office manager.

In talking to shop owners and techs on a tech forum, most replied that they make Thanksgiving a 4-day weekend. In my city, the mindset is "we have to compete with the chains" so few close on Black Friday just like few close on Saturdays. What they fail to realize is that the SC's who seek out a shop open on holidays and Saturdays are the exact customers that we independents DON'T WANT in the first place!

Was the opposite for my brother, who works in a big-box store's auto center.
They learned to not offer oil changes or free alignments because people used it as an alternative to finding a parking spot at the mall.
They even had their own black Friday deals, and people wondering why there was a 5-hour wait for their drive-up service.
        It makes sense.

My Black Friday was dead too. I was scheduled to work at 4 in the morning and by then, the traffic had come and gone. It was my best Black Friday ever!
