i might start posting here more again...
i have been told by someone(at work) that its possible...one of the other supervisors may be tracking what i say on FB and may try and use it against me.

i know. stupid me, shouldnt say anything on FB. but i never named names...and hey free speech right? maybe not

Ooo yeah, you gotta watch that stuff. My profile is set mostly to private, and I have the CWs I don't like outright blocked so they can't see any of my activity. Anything with profanity or anything else that could be deemed unprofessional gets posted to Friends Only. Only the good stuff I wouldn't mind a future employer/etc to see is made public.

I don't say anything I want to get back to upper management on FB, mainly because I have three managers and several co-workers [both current and former] on by buddy list. If they don't like what little I post on FB and use it against me, I can say that I have not and will not say anything about work on FB so it's really a moot point anyways.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

You *have* the right to free speech. You can say/write anything you like. It's the consequences that you have to live with.

It's very common for companies to track what their employees say on FB. Never say something there that you wouldn't say to their face. Some companies will even check out the FB page of everyone that applies for a job.

my profile is set to private so you cant see anything. i deleted some people i used to work with who work in other stores now. i have 2 on there now that i work with. but one of them ive known for years..anyways, im gonna shut my mouth on there. i just know that someone from another store mustve seen something and then spread it around that store...

I know a bunch of people added our manager back when she was a lowly peon (she was one for about 3 months). She's called in about four people I know of over stuff that they have posted on Facebook and how it's not promoting a good image of the workplace.

If this account was ever linked to who I really was, I would be gone the next day.

Very very ditto, for reasons other than HR (although probably our HR wouldn't like it either). Gotta have someplace to rant!

It does depend on what's in your contract as to if you can get fired for saying anythig bad (at least in the UK, but I'm guessing it doesn't apply to many US states...) - most companies have "company image" clauses, and usually make a point of flagging up social networking. But hey, they can't blame you if they don't know it's you! Aliases are wonderful things

Yeah, the college just fired one of the cleaning staff because every time she called in "sick", she would be updating on FB what she was doing all day, and it wasn't being sick.

Aren't they just?? When I was laid off, one of the first things I did was change my Facebook name. The last name is still my real one, but the first two are definitely not. And my privacy levels are set as high as I can get them. Despite that, if I have a gripe, I send it via private FB message. I do not EVER post a work-related gripe on FB!

Its stuff like this that make me lock my FB page down so nobody sees anything unless they are friended, and I will NOT add coworkers/managers/bosses to FB - its just asking for trouble, IMHO. If the management is admant that "everybody" be on the same page and have FB then I'll make one up if its needed and use that for work only.

Argh, big pet peeve of mine -- freedom of speech ONLY means that the government can't punish you for what you say. It does NOT mean that private individuals, such as your employers, can't.

Two more aspects to consider. It can be easy to slide into libel when venting about a company.
Also, sad as it may be, a "friend" can circumvent all the privacy modifications on the site by printing out something posted and taking it into work. Sad, but happened fairly recently at my company.

                          Pic humorously related...

There is a way on Fakebook to make it so only certain people can see wall posts. If you wanted to, you could make it so anything bad you say about your workplace is visible only by family members. I don't use that site very much, but I've hidden posts before because I may only want certain people to read them. When you post, just hover your mouse cursor over the top right corner of the post box and from there you can choose if the post is public or private and if there are certain friends whom you do not want to read that post.

Personally, I'd never bitch about work on my Facebook where there's a name to attach to the words. I bitch everywhere else, though. Here, and I've also ranted on ComplaintsBoard and ScamInformer. That may not apply to your employer, but it sure as hell applied to mine.
