  • Current job is driving me nuts; need advice

I am still employeed with the parking company I work for, but I am seriously considering looking for another full-time job. Here is what I have had to deal with lately.
    • I was getting full-time hours as a parking attendant and as a money pickup assistant
    • For some reason, I was transferred out of doing money pickup, and my hours were cut in half *20 hours this week instead of the usual 40 hours I get every week* for this weeks schedule. I was not formally disciplined on the job while working as a parking attendant and as a money pickup assistant. I received no warning from anyone in management that I was not doing my job properly... verbally or in writing
    • I was working during the daytime, but now I will be working at night

When I look for a full-time job, what should I tell a prospective employer as to why I want to quit working for my current employer?

I think all you need to tell them is that you're looking for full-time work, because your hours have been cut at your regular job and you need a job with more hours. If the current employer hasn't given you a reason, you can say that to a potential employer -- you weren't given a reason and you have no cause to suspect that it's related to your performance.

That way you aren't slagging your current employer, or asking for anything unreasonable from the potential employer. You just need full-time work rather than part-time. Keep the attitude that you haven't done anything wrong, because you weren't told that you did, and be confident about it.

Tell them that you're looking to advance your career?

other examples are here - you don't have to necessarily trash the old place, just that you want more challenges, or better advancement opportunities, etc

I'd just say that your hours have been cut and changed by your current employer and therefore you are looking for something that more matches your routines. Especially with being moved from days to nights.

The term "underemployment" is popular right now. It means you either are not working at full-time hours, or working a job you are overqualified for. Either fits for perfectly valid reasons to job hunt while working.

            Update

Turns out that the parking company found more hours for me, but I will be working a split shift... probably 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and then work at another parking garage Saturday mornings.

So I will be looking for a full-time job... one shift only

Split shift? Ugh, you have my sympathies.

Those hours...yikes! Yes, I'd be looking for a new job, too. I wish you the best of luck on your job search.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I wish you luck, as well -- All I can say is, don't do what my brother used to do ... ALWAYS try and secure the new job, with a firm starting date, before giving notice at the old one.

I hope you find something better soon too. Split shifts are just annoying to say the least. They're even more irritating when you have a long commute and don't want to waste the gas driving back and forth.

Remember, a lot of companies are cutting/mucking around with peoples hours, a prospective employer is far more likely to think your company is having workload/cash issues, than think you've done anything to deserve it. Good luck.
