  • Got a new job shadow

So I want to get into physical therapy assisting. I was hoping to start classes this spring but long story short my application into the program was fubared and I have to wait another year to apply. So I'm seeking more job shadows to get more experience hours to strengthen my application.

An acquaintance who works at a rehab facility gave me the number of the facility and the name of who she thought the PT was. So I just called the facility.

    Receptionist: "[Rehab Facility]"
Me: "Yes this is bhskittykatt. I think I want to talk to [name]. I'm a student trying to get into the PTA program at [college] and am looking for job shadow opportunities."
Receptionist: "Yes we do that. One moment while I transfer you."

    *hold music*

[Name]: "This is [name], how may I help you?"
Me: "Hi, this is bhskittykatt. I'm a student trying to get into the PTA program at [college] and am looking for job shadow opportunities. [Acquaintance] referred me to you."
[Name]: "Oh yeah? Well, hang on, this isn't actually the PT department. Let me transfer you to our head PT."
    Me: "Okay thanks."

    *hold music*

[PT]: "Hi, this is [PT], how can I help you?"
Me: "Hi, this is bhskittykatt. I'm a student trying to get into the PTA program at [college] and am looking for job shadow opportunities."
[PT]: "Are you in the program already?"
Me: "No, not yet. I'm looking for the experience hours for my application."
[PT]: "The thing is, we're changing ownership at the end of the month. I don't think it will be a problem, but I won't be here after the 28th, so let me see if I can get a hold of the PT who will be managing the department then."
    Me: "Aright, thanks." *eye twitch*

    *hold music*

[New PT]: "Hello this is [New PT]."
Me: "Yes this is bhskittykatt. I'm a student trying to get into the PTA program at [college] and am looking for job shadow opportunities."
[New PT]: "Sure, when can you start?"
Me: "Um...I can start anytime. Mondays and Tuesdays work best."
[New PT]: "Sure, come on in. Mornings are best."
    Me: "So...just drop in?"
[New PT]: "Yeah yeah you can follow me. Just come in and as long as one of us is here it's alright."
Me: "Okay thanks!" *talk a little more to set up more specific times*

I'm a bit confused, since other offices have their shadows scheduled for specific times. In this town, it can be hard to find shadows since the program is fairly competitive to get into. Once I finally go to the right person....it seemed too easy. I'll find out more on Monday.

If all goes well, though...I can maybe get the rest of my experience hours here. That would be nice.

Maybe you're the first person to call the PT who'll be managing the department when the current one leaves ...? Anyway, congratulations, and good luck!

Maybe you're the first person to fully play out the phone tag gauntlet you had to go through.
