  • Not quite a criminal mastermind

Another team huddle at the swamp this morning, held by LP. Seems the only time we have huddles lately is when LP wants to make us aware of something.

Over the weekend, the swamp just to the south of us had somebody come through trying to pass counterfeit money. $1 bills turned into $100s. The bills were described as falling apart and being in bad shape.

The cashier called for a manager. The customer said "Oh, I thought these bills might be counterfeit," scooped them up, and left.

So...you think you got counterfeit money from someplace, and the first thing you do with it is try to spend it? Way to leave no doubt.

"Oh, I think I better gather up the evidence and run" would have been only slightly more to the point.

I can see if someone found themselves with fakes and they couldn't afford the loss to try and pass them I guess, but who doesn't remember where they got 100's from?

but the bleached dollars work well with the money-pens, which is why they're such a risk to retail stores. as far as the pens care it's money, just not the denomination that it claims to be.

which reminds me I saw a UV scanner online that actually shows what the stripes are suppose to be etc. perhaps not a big item for retail stores though - cos I can't imagine someone buying one for every single register … unless it was a small privately owned store, or say a casino where they can afford a few of them.

Wow, not exactly a great save on the custy's part to try and disguise the fact that they were passing a fake hundy...

Tho, keep in mind, AFAIK, at least in the US, passing a counterfeit bill can still get you arrested even if you have no way to know it was a fake.

You can actually see those strips (or at least one strip) by just holding up the bill to the light/sunlight. It'll be written what denomination it is, not sure if bleaching it will get rid of that.

Even if it did, it would take a lot of effort to put in another strip that has the right denomination written on it in the right place.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

Bleaching doesn't change the stripe. That's why it's good to know where the stripe is on each kind of bill. It will tell you all you need to know about the bill.

I don't think it can get you charged, as long as they believe you didn't know, but it will certainly get you a long conversation with some humorless folks from the secret service. The kind of people who want to know exactly how you came by the bill, etc.

                    Looked it up, as IANAL.

They can certainly charge someone with passing a fake bill if it is caught, but it seems that, legally, the important thing is *intent* to defraud. A discussion of how one would "prove" intent is probably better off on Fratching, tho

Also pays to actually READ the stripe too, if that helps anyone in this thread. Because doesn't the stripe also say what the bill is supposed to be even if its on X side of X bill>=??

I'm sure that somewhere there's an official guide to identifying counterfeit money. Indeed, there's probably one for each first-world nation's money.

Most places of business have a giant picture/graph-like thing that shows what real bills look like versus common fakes (or tactics to use fakes).

Obviously, you can't just take every bill and hold it up to the picture, but if you're ever slow at work, it won't hurt to just take a gander at it and familiarize yourself with the common markings and whatnot.

US ones will have it written in both letter and numerical. So you'll see "TEN 10 TEN 10 TEN 10" going down the stripe.
