  • Got insulted at pet store today, I think...

Just a bit of a rant I guess.

A tiny bit of background. I am a South Jersey girl living in San Diego. I've been out here for over 10 years. I am the perfect example of "you can take the girl out of South Jersey, but you can take the South Jersey out of the girl". I always have and always will LOVE the Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers. End background.

Today my husband and I hit the local smart pet shop to get parts for the filter on our turtles' tanks. We had replaced one of the tanks about 5 weeks ago and need to swap out some of the parts. However since we just got a new tank for the smaller guy, we were not 100% sure what we needed. So, my hubby asked an employee who was walking by if he could help us.

    PSG - Pet Store Guy
    H - my hubby
Me- well, me. I am wearing a Flyer's t-shirt (this becomes important in a few)

H - excuse me? Do you know anything about these filters? We are not sure which of the sponges we need for filter #105.
PSG - Oh I don't know anything these filters. (then after looking at me). Oh are you from Philly?
M - I from South Jersey, just out side of Philly.
H - how about you? (my hubby makes friends EVERYWHERE we go)
PSG - oh I'm from Connecticut. I HATE the Flyers.

PSG then goes into a 10 minute diatribe about how much he hates the Flyers and how great of a hockey player he was and how much the Flyers suck, how much the Phantoms , the Flyers' farm team sucks, etc. I walk away to find what we need while my hubby stays there and listens to this guy's crap because the hubby is too nice of a guy to just walk off while some one is talking.

I guess it just really bugged me to spend over $50 after hearing how much my favorite hockey team sucks. And no I didn't to complain to the manager. I mean yea it pissed me off and I do feel that the PSG should have just stopped when I said I was from South Jersey and left it at that. But I didn't feel that a complaint was necessary.
If what doesn't kill me makes me stronger, I should be able to lift an 18 wheeler with my pinky toe.

Reminds me to watch what I say to customers. One time I made fun of myself and ended up offending someone.

With that guy? Yeah... He'd be getting his comments thrown right back. Don't screw with Philly.

Sadly, you're right on both counts, star. PSG was a sucky clerk for inflicting his opinion on you folks, but a decent human doesn't whinge to management over something trivial like that.
In his defense, I know that we northeasters tend to be a little more vehement in our sports discussions; maybe he just missed that aspect of not being 'back home' and was doing some bonding?

*blinks* I.. know next to nothing about teams. The sports themselves, yes. Teams, no.

Now, I did get stopped and asked about my Thundercats t-shirt and when asked if I knew what it meant, I responded, "Old school series or the new one?" *sigh* He went on a tirade about people wearing tees that don't know what they mean. I did manage to derail him onto a different kind of rant.. DC vs Marvel. I think the guy just wanted to rant.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

It's an arbitrary contest played by over payed children. Can't we all just love the game :P

Having encountered Philly sports fans before, I think I'm right in saying he wouldn't be getting his comments thrown back. He'd be getting his teeth thrown back.

Being from NORTH Jersey and a rabid Giants and Rangers fan, I might have joked about the rivalry a bit but never would have been nasty. It's all in fun, but there are some who just can't get that there are other teams besides theirs in the universe. My friend's hubby is a huge Eagles fan, living in Big Blue land, and I love to push his buttons during football season. But....we joke around, that's it. and one of my new managers is a Pats fan. I told her no matter how well we get along now,we won't be friends during football season.

This is why I do not follow sports at all. XD I am quite small and not up to arguing sports.

Why Batman and Joker are a canon couple, maybe. One team vs. another, no. It would be like arguing with Sonic fanboys.

I probably better not ever move anywhere else, lest I get shit for all of my pink Packer jerseys.

And other Canadians (myself included) are so NOT into sports that we don't have a clue how many touchdowns the Leafs got in the World Series.

My store sells t-shirts with the state name on it that just happens to kinda look like the logo for a university. One day I had this guy go over the top crazy happy seeing those shirts. We're going to sell out of them and the university team is going to go all the way to the championships and on and on. I just looked at him, I just really don't care. Mr. Superfan finally caught my vibe and made a comment. I said that I'm not even from this state.

The only sport that I really follow is football, I vaguely follow other teams just watching the news and if one of the other local ones are doing good in playoffs or something I like to see them do good but if they don't, I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

Ah...the Flyers. The team that always looks good until they hit the ice...and then ends up at the bottom of the Atlantic. Much like the Titanic, in fact

And yes, I am a Pens fan. I enjoy the rivalry. But, some people--on both sides--take it much too far. They'll go into "enemy" territory, attempt to start shit...and promptly find themselves bleeding on the sidewalk.

I like my rivalry too; Rangers/Flyers - but I'd never get into it with other fans.

the best example of a rivalry I got to witness was maybe 15 years ago; i worked with someone who was a rabid NY Yankees fan, and had partial season tickets. She invited me to a Yankee/Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium, and it was Roger Clemens against Pedro Martinez. Scoreless until the 9th, I think, and Boston won.

That's true lol. I mean I find enough excuses to fight with people, I don't need sports teams haha
