  • Public Safety Announcement about Hay Bales

Seriously, people! Hay bales are flammable! Just because the restaurant has them piled up outside for you to sit on to wait for your table to be ready doesn't mean it's a good idea to sit on them and smoke cigarettes! Sapphire Silk and the Evil Overlord saw not one, but two different people flicking ashes from their cigarettes right into the hay bales. For the love of little green men, how could they possibly think that this is a smart idea?

Oh, wait, I forgot. You'd have to think to realize it's not a good idea.
Sorry, my cow died so I don't need your bull

Reminds me of the time one of the little "islands" in the parking lot (with small trees/shrubs planted in mulch) started smoldering, because some idiot was sitting in their car smoking and throwing the butts directly onto said mulch. Had to run out there with the hose and douse the entire thing for almost fifteen minutes, just to make sure there wouldn't be any unexpected flare-ups.

We had the same problem at my job, but that was people throwing them off the catwalk and into the mulch below. People weren't supposed to be smoking on the catwalk to begin with, but they did it anyway. Not only did it almost cause a fire a time or two, there was also the risk of it landing on someone on one of the lower levels. The company would occasionally send out a nastygram about it, and even threaten to restrict the smoking areas further, or ban smoking on the property completely. But they never followed through.

They enclosed the catwalks a couple years ago, and just a few weeks ago they removed the mulch and laid down stones, so it's not as much of a problem anymore. As far as I know anyway.

Had someone do that at the resort this year. Got it put out in time. At the motel, someone did this and we lost some hedges; it was right next to the pool too so the fire retardant and ashes blew into the pool and it had to be shut down for the day for cleaning as well. Have also come across smoldering mulch once on the paper route and had to call the fire dept to come out and deal with it since I didn't have an extinguisher on me.

Maybe they'll start bathing hay bales in fire retardant..

I would have been tempted to hose down his car, too. Ya know, just to be safe.

Someone set the ashtray in the smokepit on fire once... How? My theory is no one EVER bothered to clean it out. Informed the quarterdeck & poured a waterbottle over it.

Ah yes, we had that happen a few times at the resort. Informing the people in charge of cleaning it out did nothing. Last time it happened, I called GM over and waited for him to come out to point to the now-billowing smoke and said "This is why this is a problem." Put it out, and once the GM personally saw the chronic issue we were having he must have ripped someone a new one b/c we stopped having trouble with the ashtrays catching fire.
