Take on jerks that is. So far, I've
1. gotten into a shouting match with a guy taking up the loading area of handicapped parking,
2. pepper sprayed a Trailer Park Queen who was beating the shit out of a smaller woman
3. Yelled at some old skinbag who was bullying a special-needs clerk
Today I put another notch in my belt. I went to Whole Paycheck (it's right by work, don't judge me!) to get some delicious hot soup (mmm fish special). I was being rung out while the jerkwad (hereafter JW) before me was going off (not yelling, but using that self-important-I'm-a-prick tone) to the cashier, saying "you weren't involved in this, why did you get involved, blah blah blah."
From what I was able to gather from context, he'd apparently chewed out the regular cashier to the point that she was crying (probably some poor high school or college kid) and the cashier's supervisor jumped in to handle the transaction. JW didn't like being denied the opportunity to continue being a bully, and turned his self-righteous frustration on the supervisor.
Said supervisor told JW (albeit very politely) that he had already been helped and he needed to take his purchases and have a nice day (corporate speak for "get the hell out"). He continued with his tirade about how he hadn't done anything wrong, blah blah blah. Before I really had time to think too much, I found myself saying "she's asked you to leave, are you going to walk away or am I going to call the cops?" He kept going, this time telling me I needed to get out in the world and meet more people, how residents of <my city> get upset over nothing, blah blah blah.
Now, I work at a hotel. I serve people from all over the globe every day, from every imaginable background, and there's no culture that condones bullying service workers until they cry. However, I knew enough not to argue with JW (not going down to his level) so I simply aid "you've been asked to leave, you're legally trespassing and I'm calling" and put my phone to my head. JW left, still telling me we're all too easily offended, the supervisor should mind her own business, blah blah blah. I don't care. I got rid of him. Plus, three people in this scenario thought he was the jerk. Me, the cashier he made cry, and the cashier's supervisor. He was out-voted.
So apparently, even though I was shaky and had an upset stomach (I couldn't eat my soup right away
for reheating lobster bisque), I am only scared into silence when it's myself I'm defending. Mess with a fellow retail sufferer (or one of my guests...that's a story for another time) and IT IS ON.
