Google Maps has a public transit option. It tells you what stop to get on, what stop to get off, and links to Street View so you can see landmarks. If you hit Navigation the nice computer lady will even tell you what stop to get off at. To say I am directionally challenged would be like saying Herman Melville wrote a little hand book about fishing. Google Maps has saved my bacon more times than I can count, and I can't imagine that in a big city like London where lots of people use public transit, it wouldn't work as well as it does here in Denver. I totally understand not wanting to do it with luggage, but you don't have to pay for cabs once you get to your hotel.
