  • Police...why you do this? (nothing serious)

Ok so last night, as I was trying to get to sleep, I noticed something odd. I live near downtown in a big city, so sirens on Friday night are nothing out of the ordinary. However, this siren was...odd. You know the sound police cars make when they are just turning on the siren? It's kind of a Booowoop Booowoop boop boop boop (or something like that), but NOT the usual rise and fall of a siren running as it would on a car on it's way to a call.

Well last night Officer Friendly seemed to be parked doing that weird siren thing for over an hour. It wasn't close by enough to be super annoying (love my earplugs) but I have no idea why they were doign that, and I also heard the occasional air horn of a fire truck. Is anyone familiar with law enforcement procedures who could explain why they were making the siren make that weird sound? Sobriety checkpoint maybe?

    Car alarm? Home burglar alarm?

This was defiantly a police siren. Car alarms and house alarms sound nothing like that.

No clue. Funniest thing i've seen or rather heard here in St Louis was a police car using a Europian siren. Programming error?

Probably right that it was a sobrity check if he wasn't moving.

Usually the cops will use the siren like that if they are trying to get people's attention in a crowded area (usually at night) when responding to a call to keep the noise down. They'll also use it like that if they need to clear a path, but it wouldn't be a good idea to have all the sirens screaming to tell people they are on the way - like to an in-progress robbery.

About what time was it? I ask, because some places held their Halloween stuff early, so Officer Friendly may have been working one and was letting kids try the siren, especially if you hear the occasional fire truck horn/siren too. Kids get a big kick out of it and it costs the department so little for a big PR boost.

Otherwise, sobriety check and/or possible man hunt?

This was around midnight. Im guessing sobriety checkpoint / crowd control since it was Halloween weekend. They seem to be doing it again tonight, which would make sense if we are correct in our speculations, because it was a game day and the Horsies won.
