  • Well, that's a smart move

Former fellow student posts on FB: "I swear to God fucking idiots run this place."

    About his workplace.

Somebody responded, saying it wasn't really appropriate, and FFS replied with "They don't pay me enough to be appropriate."

Okaaaaay ... tell you what, halfwit, I will take your job. Whatever they're paying you, it's a damn sight more than I'm making right now.

Eh, unless it was a public post or his boss is one of the people in the restricted list of recipients, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to blow off steam on your own wall.

I have a family member that has posted very negative comments about her workplace online. She's also friends with a lot of coworkers online, so it's no stretch of the imagination that the wrong person could easily see the posts and take offense. And I guess that's the thing, it's never a problem posting rants online...until it is. I agree with the OP, it isn't wise to post negatively online about your workplace when your posts are attached to your own name.

Even restricted posts can be seen by "Friends of Friends" by default -- you gotta change that setting manually. I say vent all you like, but, if someone shares the post and the boss finds it, yeah, this friend may no longer have a job because of it. Have caution, in other words.

          Exactly!

The thing is, realunimportant, no matter how restricted and privatized your (generic 'your' there) Friends list is, you have no control over how restricted/privatized your friends' Friends lists are. Create a closed/secret FB group, for crying out loud, to vent your workplace spleen in; don't do it in public where anybody and everybody can see it. I don't think there's a boss in the world who would shrug this off.

They can't afford to. People that disaffected cause chaos in the workplace, and sometimes do more than that. Out of carelessness or malice, shit happens due to them and their attitudes.

I don't think this person is stupid enough to actively cause chaos in/sabotage the workplace, but as you say, I'm sure the boss wouldn't want to take the chance.

I guess I do assume too much by ascribing the ranter enough intelligence to lock those posts down.

Moods are contagious though. Nobody wants to work alongside somebody with a shit attitude, and if not handled pretty soon, it spreads to nobody wanting to work there. Training is expensive!

Unfortunately, that's true in this case, at least. I'm absolutely not a close friend of this person, so if I can see this post ...

30 years ago, before the WWW, and long before Facebook, I posted something very unwise online (yes, I was online in the late 80s!), and someone brought it to the attention of my boss. He wasn't pleased. I nearly got fired.
I learned my lesson back then.
