Kind of a third-hand sighting, as I did not witness the customer who caused this, but I got to see what he caused.
I had some repair work done on my scooter (legally a moped but no pedals) at a shop that also sells them and ATVs and dirt bikes and scooter-style motorcycles. They promised the work would be done before close of business, so I came to pick it up the next morning and arrived a few minutes before they opened. There were employees setting up (putting vehicles out on the lot and stuff) and seemed happy to let me wait inside. And as it turns out, the work wasn't 100% done so I was hanging around for about an hour.
So shortly after they opened ... I saw a tense but quiet conversation between three employees. I heard the boss tell the head mechanic "keep this door closed" about the door to the service area. They locked the front door.
When customers came to the door, they'd unlock and let them in and say they were restricting the number of people in the shop, and occasionally do a quick out-loud count ... that I'm pretty sure didn't actually count everyone.
And twice I heard one of the bosses tell a junior employee "If you see him, come get me."
Because I was just sitting there waiting, I think I started to blend in to the furniture. That is, I think some of the employees didn't realize I was a customer, so I overheard some things they were (quite wisely) not sharing with the customers.
Apparently, a regular customer with whom they were all familiar had telephoned and was quite irate. And he had said things that they were pretty sure he didn't mean, but had taken reasonable precautions (including involving the police) just in case he really was serious about coming by to "shoot the place up".
For what it's worth, they did seem to be making an effort to, subtly, keep the customers where they couldn't be seen through the windows. And simultaneously had people watching the windows so they'd know if Mr.Irate actually came on the property.
