Once again: if I have something un-bagged (especially something huge) or if the alarm goes off, I have no problem, repeat NO PROBLEM, with presenting my receipt. However, as you yourself have mentioned, the greeters are NOT supposed to check receipts if everything is bagged and nothing sets the alarm off.

In that situation, I am going to assume that I'm being targeted because they think I 'look like a thief' or (for the 'old fuddy-duddy' types) just to hassle me because I'm a guy with long hair... and that is not going to fly with me.
And that's fine, JustADude. I won't hold that against you. I'm more upset at the people who sound like they're out to get the door-greeter as upset as possible just because they don't like to stop at all. To that, I say complain to Corporate. If you do get hassled again, I apologize on behalf of my former co-workers, and recommend talking to store management about the problem.

Ah, understandable then. The 'bring up the legal issues' part made me think you were talking about my way of handling them. I agree, totally, on that clarified point though: Killing the messenger when they've got a legitimate job to do is just the kind of behavior this board was created to bitch about.

As for management... eh... I'm going to tell them to go shove it (more politely, of course) if they hassle me, but I don't think it's a big enough offense against humanity to warrant a possible firing, unless they insist on being jerks about it.

Also, I think one of the reasons I get so annoyed with getting stopped at random isn't just that it implies they think I'm a thief, but that they think I'm stupid enough to get caught like that even if I was going to steal. I mean, seriously, who here with a job that has customers can say they can't think of three ways for a customer scam, shoplift, or otherwise dissect their own store's defenses... just off the top of their heads. I'm not saying that anyone would ever actually do such, of course, just saying that once you get a look 'behind the scenes' at a retail store, you start to see the chinks in the armor.
