  • Turn back the clocks tonight...

and there's sure to be stories tomorrow. Here's one already....

I volunteer for the local Chamber Of Commerce helping out at some of their events. This morning, it was helping load peoples luggage into buses to the airport for a 9 day trip to China. Some of the Chamber staff were mentioning how people that are leaving to go tomorrow (they have so many, they split the trips over several days) have been calling the Chamber to make sure they are aware about the time change for the Sunday morning trip, or asking what they (the people on the trip) should do. One staff person told them when they go to bed, turn their clock back one hour. I mentioned even if they didn't, it's not like they'll miss the bus since they'd be an hour early for departure.

If daylight savings time is so good then why don't make it permanent? I mean, "Standard Time" is only 4 months anyway.

Theoretically, it's six months. But somebody decided to run an experiment and see if, by extending it two months, it saved electricity. I don't know what it's like nationally (and don't care), but in my house it does the opposite: lights get turned on in the morning and then not turned off all day, using extra electricity.

my story: I work graveyard and get to work an extra hour tonight.
Things just get so crazy living life gets hard to do. I would gladly hit the road, get up and go if I knew, that someday it would bring me back to you.

ditto... on the bright side though, in 4 months we get a free hour

I'm still trying to figure out the logic behind the expression "Spring Forward - Fall Back".

It makes more sense as "Fall Forward (since we're setting the clocks ahead by one hour). My brain hurts, but then again, I'm not really a logically thinking person.

I did, however, send out an email on Friday to my co-irkers reminding them to do so (they'll use any excuse to be able to come in late), along with a "gentle reminder" to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and a strong suggestion to back-up personal laptops and desktops at home over the weekend (after my baby crashed a few months ago. I hadn't backed up in a while and I paid through the nose to have the Dr. save everything for me before formatting my hard-drive) My fault and I take full responsibility for not doing so!

There's a reason why Arizona and Saskatchewan don't observe it at all in North America.

"Spring Forward, Fall Back" makes perfect sense to me.

In the Spring we set our clocks forward one hour (losing an hour) and in the Fall we set our clocks back on hour (gaining an hour).

                You've got it backwards.

DST is an outdated concept that we should just get rid of entirely.

As an aside, I was pleasantly surprised when my linux box updated itself. I'd always had problems with the clock on it, probably due to some error during the original install. I must've downloaded an update that fixed it, but I don't remember that.

My company docks the 3rd shifters for the hour in the spring when the clocks go forward.

                    Nice.

Which is why logic isn't my strong suit. My (twisting) thinking is:

If it was 10:00pm on Saturday prior to the change, and I changed the time on my clock radio for DST happening, it was then 11:00pm on the clock, but 10:00pm in "real life".

The next day (after the change), it's 10:00pm in "real life" and 9:00pm in "yesterday's old life". So didn't we actually set our clocks ahead?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but wow - it's confusing to me. (Which is why I let someone else do my taxes !)

The CO alarms in my mom's building have been sounding off for battery changes almost like clockwork this past weekend...(strange setup though; it was the full-on alarm and not the usual "service" chirp, but the battery and service lights were on and changing the battery did fix it). After seeing a "change your clocks, change your batteries" banner on the local firehouse, she was wondering if there's somehow a sensor in the units to say "hey idiot, change my battery" every time DST changes. That would make sense, as most people don't really do that regularly.

That honestly makes no sense to me.

You shouldn't be setting your clock ahead at all.

This is how Wikipedia describes it:
In a typical case where a one-hour shift occurs at 02:00 local time, in spring the clock jumps forward from 02:00 standard time to 03:00 DST and the day has 23 hours, whereas in autumn the clock jumps backward from 02:00 DST to 01:00 standard time, repeating that hour, and the day has 25 hours.
So in the Spring, we completely skip the hour of 2:00am-3:00am (clock goes directly from 1:59am to 3:00am), in the Fall, we repeat the hour of 2:00am-3:00am (clock goes from 2:59am back to 2:00am [or from 1:59am back to 1:00am, not quite sure which hour we actually repeat]).

                              Does that help?
