What a lot of people don't realize is that trains (commercial or transit) have the right of way because they're on tracks. They can't swerve, they can't stop too quickly (without severe damage to the train and the tracks), and if a pedestrain causes an accident (whether they are hit or not) the train co will sue that pedestrian for property damages. And win. I forget the city, but a woman was stalled on some tracks, had plenty of time to get out of her car and run, but decided to try to start the car instead. She is paralyzed and comatose from the accident but lost a suit to the train company and her family is now paying for all new wheels and brakes on that specific train ($$$).

Info provided by my neighbor who works for RTD (public transit in Denver).

Next on our list of idiots... and this actually happened all day... to be specific, it happened 8 times if I counted properly, idiots dashing in front of the train trying to cross the track as it approached the station... seriously, the trains run every 15 minutes, it is not worth risking your life to get onto the platform to catch the train when a train is approaching.
People do that in Toronto even though the train runs every 4 minutes and there's an electrified 3rd rail.

      Other transit experiences:
Mississauga - Guy on bus starts yelling racist comments. Then gives an evil stare to someone using a phone and says that its not right to use your phone on the bus. Yeah, well it's also not right to yell racist comments on the bus now is it?

OCTranspo (Ottawa) - I asked the driver to point out my stop because I don't know where it is, he asks me at 3 stops if it's the one I need, which I don't know...

There was a clown on the TTC subway on Saturday. and he was changing... There also was a drunk teenager singing to himself.

i've only ridden a train once...at a trainstation museum. and busses? a few public transport ones to get to the city when i had no other option...not bad, except for all the waiting around... subway? quite the experience on class trips to major cities...nobody doing outrageous things though...

was walking on the sidewalk and saw a random bra in the middle of the street... O.O

          the one nitpick I'll make.
A train is any vehicle made up of multiple cars running on a fixed guide way. It may have a locomotive (or locomotives) providing power for all cars, or each car may provide it's own power.
So, by definition a subway is a train, so obviously you've ridden a train more than once

oh, and for those who are wondering, if it is just one car running on a fixed guide way it can be considered either a tram or a trolley, both are acceptable nomenclature and really depends on regional preference.

            a funny one for once

OK, last night I got a bus driver, who although kind of creepy was really funny.

He kept making shit up for his stop announcements (and SG knows a lot of these already since I was IMing him with the stuff as the driver said it).
            Things like
"400 west 200 south, Gateway District, this is where you go to shop if you have too much money"
"West Temple and 200 south, there is a lot of hotels here... nothing extraordinary, I doubt any of you are getting off because these places are all nice enough to provide shuttle"
"300 South West Temple, if you want the best drugs exit here and go one block west"
"500 South West Temple, here are more hotels... it's more likely you'll need to get off here, these places kind of suck"
"Redwood Road and North Temple... get off here only if you are really desperate"

he was just have a blast bashing the major stops... and I was loving every minute of it because they were all so true

Why does this thread remind me of Firesign Theater's "I Think We're All Bozos On This Bus"?

                        driver sighting

OK, we have a multiple choice quiz today.

If you have a bus full of people, at least one of which is obviously gay (I'm wearing my geek pride shirt today), and the radio station commentator starts commenting about how "all those god damned fags should just be shipped off to some desert island to cease their culture war against good upstanding Americans"
                        do you
                        A. Realize that even if you didn't know that you have at least one gay passenger, or straight passengers who don't approve of homophobia, this is not something appropriate to be listening to on a public bus due to the profanities and change the station/turn it off.
                        B. Turn it up and nod your head and make comments about "damned right"

Guess which one the driver chose

this is Utah, most bigoted state in the nation... it was in excellent taste for the radio station because it will boost their ratings
This is after all the home of Chris Buttars (which is where I'll stop before taking this really deep into fratching territory)

though, in unrelated news... the new voice recordings used to announce the stops on the University line set off my gaydar

Speaking of bus announcements, the line I used to take to get home from work pinged my own gaydar pretty heavily. He had a real nice voice, too.

As for your bus driver, are they even allowed to have a radio playing loud enough for the rest of the bus to hear? I'd make a complaint about the volume, if not the content.
